How can Roman Catholics be catholics when they don't follow the canons of the catholic church(fasting on wednesdays and fridays, forcing married priests to abstain from sex with their wifes, the shaving of beards, the use of unleavened wafers, etc.)

See, here's the deal.
You claim to love the "god" you worship.
You also believe that "he" will torture you for
all eternity, if you don't accept "him."
So there is an element of FEAR in your "acceptance"
of this deity. You are motivated (if only subconsciously!)
not by LOVE for the deity, but by the same thing that makes
you grovel in front of a mob boss, loanshark, or schoolyard
bully. The emotion of FEAR, which is an ANIMAL reaction
to a threat. Here you have a guy who is threatening to torture
you, or maybe your friends and family who refuse to grovel
before "him." (Not to mention, if the "carrot" ("heaven") is so great, why does "god" need to hold up the specter of a torture pit to beat people into this "heaven" - e.g., the "stick"? This sounds like something old Vlad Dracula might do.)
So, is choosing to grovel in the face of THIS threat, not an act
of dog-like, cringing cowardice? (Even as grovelling before a playground bully and giving him all your lunch money every day is..?)

What scripture is it that says we can sell our sister into slavery for owing a debt?

Are there any other scriptures pertaining to slavery in the bible?

I know, more of the same crap, but really, it's not, I promise!

I am trying to figure out why these people claim to KNOW there is a god.

Is it just me, or does everyone agree that they believe in God because of:

1) Faith (Dogma?)
2) What they were taught, told, explained...etc

Here is what I mean.

A child is born on a deserted island (No, not imaculate conception, but let's just say it's just the mother and the child.)

The mother has never heard of religion before. Therefor, the child will never hear about religion from it's mother. Would this child all of a sudden believe in a god? Without some outside force compelling this child to believe, my thought is that he wouldn't.

Now, we have people saying they KNOW there is a god. How do they know? Saying I "KNOW" something implies that you have proof of what you claim to know.

As an atheist, I do not deny the possibilty that there COULD be a god, I just choose not to believe it myself. Explain please?

Thanks!

Seriously, if you read something in the paper, does that make it infallibly how everyone who looks or acts like that person representative of each and every member of that group? Take that Christian mother who was found today. Her ex husband, a selfish little twit, killed her because he didn't want to have the responsibility for paying child support for another child, which he should have thought about before cheating on his current wife. Does that mean all Christian men will kill their pregnant wives or lovers since we keep hearing stories about it?

No, that sounds stupid you say? Don't you think it sounds just as stupid when you see some people from other countries doing stupid stuff and generalize the same stupid stuff about them? And why is it that when these things happen, religion is not mentioned, but if it's a muslim who did it, there religion is the first thing the media shouts? I really don't get it. Parents killing and nuking kids, should I generalize the same?

Lover of God posted this in response to an answer I gave to one of his questions.

"Girl wonder

I wonder if you ever get tired of saying "I dont worship your God" "I dont believe in the Bible." Why dont you go play dungeons and dragons, or draw a baphomet or something. Your answers are neither informative or constructive. Just a waste of your time and others."

I can't tell if he's calling me a geek or a heathen. Or maybe both? And why won't he use apostrophes? What did they ever do to him?

I work for an agency who helps the Hispanic population and have surveyed just how many men make babies and don't even take care of them. I just don't get it. Their children even say on my father's side, my father has 5 sons and 7 daughters. They seem to think that it is all the rage to create life and leave it with their mothers. The mothers then turn to the welfare system to provide for their children. What do you think?

For example, male shoplifters tend to sell back the items they stole and the money that they received wiil be used to help their family, pay up the bills, debt etc in other words, male shoplifters do shoplifting just for a matter of life and death but female shoplifters tend to keep all the good they steal as a 'private collections".It's all about 'me','myself' and 'i' for them.No wonder some women become so addicted to such behaviour. Why?

I have a very thin (very!) friend. Its strange but sometimes people ask her if she is doing okay or if she is sick. Maybe its because we are in Idaho; I don't know. All I know is she eats more than I do. I think we calculated it once and she eats about 400 more calories a day than I.

Anyways, she got fed up last week with this and whenever someone asked this she would ask if they were okay because they were so fat. At first it was hilarious and they were shocked. She would usually add in something about heart disease or high blood pressure. Lately she has started adding a few choice words to her replies to these people. I think she might be getting carried away. Should I say something? Is it my place to say something?

It really brings up a good point about our society and how being really fat is viewed as normal and being really skinny is not. Mostly, I just think its a funny situation that I am a part of. I am hoping it stays that way.

Alright, so the question is how can heaven be great?
"It's a perfect world with no problems!"
Really? So there's no goals to achieve? No one to help? Nothing to create since there wouldn't be a need, it's perfect! Besides the fact that your individual existence contributes absolutely nothing to it. Whether or not you're there, doesn't really affect much of anything does it? Also, how can heaven be great if even just ONE person you love is stuck in hell? I'd rather burn forever with my loved ones, than pull a lawn chair out in the endless white by myself.

"Heaven is the best thing unimaginable"
So, Christians live a life of denying simple pleasures (seven deadly sins) in order to gain the biggest indulgence of all?

"Only those who believe in Jesus get there."
So all my possible friends and the family's in third world countries who grow up with a different religion deserve to be thrown away and forgotten?

Please, present your argument with some REASONS.

A young lad had just passed his driving test and he went to his father, a minister, to discuss the use of the family car. His father said, if you bring you're grades up, study you're Bible a little more and get you're hair cut then I'll think about it. A month later the boy went to his father and his father said. "Son I'm real proud of you. You're grades have improved and you've studied your Bible dilligently but you haven't gotten you're hair cut." The boy thought for a mnute and said "Pop I've been thinking that and y'know Samson had long hair,Moses had long hair,Noah had long hair and even Jesus had long hair." His father replied !"Yes son but they walked everywhere."

A very wealthy man had many people working for him. Each week many people were in line to be paid, and were paid well for their work. But there was a small number of the people who were not in line to be paid, and they worked very hard as well. The people who were not in line to be paid, had the lion's share of the wealth, because they could recieve a portion of the entire estate at any time. What was the difference between the ones who were in line to be paid, and the ones who worked but did not ask to be paid??
The ones who waited for pay were servants. The ones who worked and did not ask to be paid were sons. Adopted sons. We can choose to be adopted at any time.]
Servants who wait in line to be paid serve God in order to get into heaven or keep from going to hell. Sons serve God, because He first loved them and think only of giving good service to him. Are you a son or a servant?
