John L. McKenzie, S.J., in his Dictionary of the Bible, says: “The trinity of persons within the unity of nature is defined in terms of ‘person’ and ‘nature’ which are G[ree]k philosophical terms; actually the terms do not appear in the Bible. The trinitarian definitions arose as the result of long controversies in which these terms and others such as ‘essence’ and ‘substance’ were erroneously applied to God by some theologians.”—(New York, 1965), p. 899.

Even though, as Trinitarians acknowledge, neither the word “Trinity” nor a statement of the Trinitarian dogma is found in the Bible, are the concepts that are embodied in that dogma found there?

I have to go with Abraham who single handedly founded 3 religions for a single act of child torture. But if you are clever you may sway my thoughts.

It makes me sad that we connot respect each other's religion. God is love. As a Jesusian (followwer of Jesus) I love all people of all religions. There are people I don't like very much, but it is not because they call God by another name.

It's ok if you don't agree with me, but please don't be unkind to me because I shared my views.

My prayer to God is for the people of this world to stop hating so much and to love each other so we can experience peace.

this place has alot of secrets and hush hush documents etc,who thinks they should just release all of this, i think its unfair to hold back information .if someone has true faith then it would not alter in any way there beliefs .someone that questions or would question anything they are holding back i think there faith was not that strong to began with .so anyway you look at it , it would not matter ,but it could also bring non belivers to belive , so who agrees they should just release everything

I keep seeing Christians on here saying that the God is OK with state sponsored murder.

Will this story from today change your mind on that?

This is the third very disgusting and cruel case of state sponsored murder in the last year. God doesn't have a problem with this? Really?

I was busy admiring how Amish women seem to be able to do everything and anything, when this question popped into my head: if you were dropped into an Amish society, with your current skills, could you survive for one year? Anybody ever watch Pioneer House on PBS?...I'm thinking this would be similar. What current knowledge and/or skills would help you?

THE PARADOX OF BIBLICAL JABBERWOCKY
One night, I was very tired and alone in my study. I didn't reach, as I usually did, for a book of religious argument. I grabbed Lewis Carroll's "Through The Looking Glass", plopped myself down in a comfy chair and sleepily began reading. I skimmed through the pages and stopped at Humpty Dumpty's explanation of 'Jabberwocky' to Alice. A thought occurred to me that if I were to read 'Jabberwocky' the same way I read the bible, it wouldn't make any sense at all. I put Carroll's book aside, folded my hands and stared at the wall, lost in thought.

The Bible didn't make sense to me. But why did it make sense to others? What were they seeing that I didn't? Did they so desperately want there to be a God that they had deluded themselves into thinking that there was one? It was New Year's Day, 1998. I made a resolution to read the entire Bible again, only this time I was going to read it as I would poetry or fiction, and not as a proposal of fact.

I've always been interested in how people understand and articulate their own sense of spirituality. What kind of a person are you? Are you a person of faith, or do you side with reason? I would love for people to actually discuss why they do or don't believe in a respectful environment. There is a lot of unnecessary tension between the "faithful" and the "atheistic" communities--if those terms are even operable. I'm just curious what your beliefs are... Who is God to you? Does He exist or not? What is spirituality and religion to you--to humans in general? Is there room for compromise? If so, what do you propose? If not, why? (Again, be respectful of others...) For once, I'd like to hear both sides, regardless of my beliefs. I hope this leads to some deep soul (or mind) searching... Thanks.
