I am having trouble understand the concept of the 'generalized other.' I know it has something to do with how people as a whole connected to eachother, but I'm not totally grasping it. Is it everyone in general, or is it the concept of another generalized by everyone? ...Or am I speaking nonsense?

I am mixed (black and white) but most of the kids I skate with are black. I mean our white friends even call us white so we ditch talk to some black friends and they say the same, we ask why and they say "because blacks don't do that" or "that stuff is gay ***** get a life".

ALSO . If we as black men and women can not except others of our own race how will we ever be accepted? Isn't that what Martin and Malcolm fought for!!! How can we as black people overcome racism if we cannot accept our own race just because they skate, or are smart, play hockey, lacrosse, or do other things, or anything else. Thats like saying whites can't be rappers, blacks aren't good leaders, and asians aren't athletic. These are racist, stereotypical, and angering. Some of these stereo types do have a little statistical basis but it's still racist.
Does anyone know any books on this subject

There's a woman in our university who teaches us Stylistics. I only missed her class once. So today I was sitting in a classroom and there she was passing by. The door was open so she'd noticed me and beckoned me to come out. I thought she'd just ask me why I missed her class yesterday, but instead she sort of bawled me out for missing that class. It wasn't nice... She had thrown a bunch of emotional trash at me and left feeling better and quite satisfied with herself, I'm sure. And I'd been all bummed out about it for the rest of the day. Perhaps her negative energy had nothing to do with me, I'm aware of that, but it doesn't make me feel better. Now I have a real dilemma in front of me. I may not attend her class again, though it'll be tricky, but I think I could do that, or I may continue going there and pretend nothing's happened but then I'll feel like a moron anyone can vent on whenever they like. Simply put, it'll make a damage to my self-esteem. So what should I do?!

I remember one time i was talking with someone about racism and racists people. then i looked at some ants and it hit me. How come i never see the black ants hang out with the brown ants? The red ants are usually agressive and i never see any of them co exists but only within there own races( or species) of ants. Why is this? I also heard from a teacher that they are racists towards each other and tend to have wars againts each other. Does this mean that racism is just a natural survival instinct to perserve ones species. But shouldnt humans have evolved out of this? This confuses me.

Ive been on answers by yahoo for a short while and Ive read some answers and comments that alot of people have said to some questions whne it comes to race and when we talk about black people. Some people can sound so ignorant and nasty when they describe what they feel about black folks. As a African American woman I do take offense to that. Yes this is a free country with free speech, but people should take a minute to think before they speak when they are making their statements. Not all black people are lazy, or criminals or on welfare. There are alot of hard working ,educated blacks out there that do very well in society. They get constantly harrassed for everything and dont get no break.. Please think before you speak!!!!

Impliicit in Berger's argument is the idea that those who are content with the status quo may not be as able to acquire a sociological perspective.

"So postsixties American liberalism preseves the old racist hierarchy of whites over blacks as virtue itself; and it grants all whites who identify with it a new superiority. In effect, it says you are morally superior to other whites and intellectually superior to blacks. The white liberal's reward is this feeling that because he is heir to the knowledge of the wet, yet morally enlightened beyond the west's former bigotry, he is really a "new man," a better man then the world has seen before." I came out of the station and this guy had a strange look on his face while he was looking at this middle aged couple (black male and white female) behind me. He never said anything, he just stared. I wasn't getting good vibes, could it be racism or am I just being silly?

This morning I had three dreams:
1) My parents and I were at a gas station/auto repair shop place and this gangsta guy with cornrows and a big white T on came out of the shop having just fired three shots. Everyone that was in the parking lot or in the store ran away from him and hot behind the gasoline pumps. The guy with the gun was mad because somebody there killed one of the members of his crew and he was walking around the pumps firing shots saying "If nobody fesses up, then all of you die." Then the police showed up and tried to protect everyone by hiding with them. And the strange thing was they weren't firing shots at him even though he was in perfect range, and I remember thinking: "why?" Anyways, I woke up from that one cuz I hate scary dreams.
2) This one's gonna sound really stupid. I went into my bathroom and two creepy as hell spiders were fighting and the uglier bigger one wanted to take over the other one's web. I ran and got my mom and the big spider ran and hid as

Working and middle class Americans should support republicans because the rich Republicans are the ones who have companies that actually set people up with jobs. Whereas the liberal elite only support themselves with the money they earn. That's why the unemployment rate is so high in LA, because of the elite in liberal Hollywood.
