The answer is maybe. Its not a social myth, it certainly has been true in the past. Is it still true? Not sure. Take a look at the GAO study I linked. They aren't even sure.
There's also a lot of articles on the web about why women negotiate smaller starting salaries than men. A lot of it is about us not having the confidence to ask for what we want, ask for what we believe we are worth, and settling for less. But I believe that's changing over time, as we grow more confident in the workplace. I believe the discrepancy between women and men's salaries will no longer be an issue in the next generation, or rather, only in isolated incidents.

Women do make less than men... to be exact, for every dollar a man makes a woman makes about 71 cents. That is an average so dont think oh every man makes more than a women, because lots of women make more than the average man. This statistic has become much better since the 1970s when it was about a dollar to 50 cents. Even though we have made huge strides to get gender equality, there are still some people who believe in the old way of thinking.
In sociology there is a term called the "glass ceiling", which refers to the idea that woman can move up in a company, but only so much... until she hits the glass ceiling. It's not 'technically' there, but some companies still won't allow women to rise above a certain level.
A reason some companies won't allow women to move up in rank, therefore increasing their pay is because the company thinks they will lose money because the woman will have to be out for maternity leave, or have to leave if their child is sick, etc...

The wage gap between single women and men of any family/child status is narrowing. Women who are married and/or have children, however, still make less - still only a little more than 75 cents on the dollar.
Please keep in mind that we're talking about similar positions and qualifications. For instance, I know a female psychiatrist who makes more than her attorney husband. Two totally different things. The true test is to compare what my psychiatrist friend makes with what her male colleagues make. We're also talking about averages, and of course there are always exceptions. Statistics show that men, on average, make more even in traditionally "pink collar" jobs like nursing, education, child care, cosmetology, and food service.

No, a study showed that they really do make less.
But it is understandable since a man can do more than a woman and do it faster.
(now that was for the sake of argument)
