Since the 1970's there has been a tremendous increase in the number of psychologists and therapists trained. Why is this? Is this an effect of the society and values that we hold? Is this due to a deterioration of the family unit? Increasingly, so many people see therapists (some are mandated by the courts). People are more likely to disclose that they see a therapist to help with some problems. I suspect you would be surprised to learn the percentage of people around you who either participate in therapy or take some type of medication to help them through difficulties.

I've heard many libertarian economists say this... is it because the system tends to regulate itself without government intervention I assume? Then why did the world revert from the gold standard then by the early seventies? Is it because it is difficult to maintain?

After WWI the US gave russia 8 billion rubles in aid that was never repaid. The rest of the allies added another 5 billion rubles. During and after WWII russia received 20 billion US dollars in aid from the US and Canada and never paid any back. 10 billion dollars in grain from the US in the 70's again never paid back. Without aid from the the billions of dollars of aid from the allies there wouldn't be a russia today. In your opinion, how has this affected relationships between russian and the West?

When my partner is home I am so motivated, task oriented and self-disciplined.
I do the food shopping, take care of him and myself, cook meals, do my work etc,
BUT When he goes away on business, everything goes to hell. I don't look after myself, I don't eat properly, do the food shopping, I don't cook for myself, I don't do anything except sit on the pc for hours at a time or play x box.
I'm 33!
What is THAT about??

Can both behaviours be changed by using thought control, or is an addiction too difficult to overcome with thinking and self-discipline?

I thought humans could adapt and change to fit and survive in a particular social enviornment.

Is Alcoholics Anonymous correct when they tell people addicted to the drug alcohol that they are powerless?

Are humans truly so powerless over a behaviour?

As a person that once needed to change a problematic behaviour, I was told that I had a "disease". My addicted voice (inner voice) seemed to enjoy hearing that diagnosis as it then had permission to continue with that life threatening addiction. I had to challenge my addicted voice (conscience of ID), and supply it with another more healthy behaviour, like exercise.

What in the world is happening to this world?

People addicted to the drug alcohol pay several thousands of dollars to attend institutional Alcoholics Anonymous !!

I hate myself sometimes. I despise it. I'm so darn serious with my best friend and i'm just so frustrated with her a lot of times. I mean...I feel like i'm loosing myself because of it and causing her so much pain. Half of the time when i'm telling her something she will tune me out even if it's something BIG or SMALL or she'll just plain forget about it. I don't want her perfect but i'm makeing her feel like tha she needs to be perfect. This is why I hate myself. I'm just frustrated that nothing I say seems to matter to her and when I actually bring it up she gets angry at me and says that I always say negative stuff about her.I mean me and her will be talking and then in the middle of the not so serious or serious conversation she'll come out with something and talk about that and completly forget about what i've been saying. WHAT SHOULD I DO? Should I stop being best friends for her for her sake. I don't want to be the reason why she thinks negative sometimes just like she said I do

A friend of mine that I have known for a little over 11/2 and who I was introduced to through a friend and whom I speak with only through aol instant messanger because she lives in a different state, and (who likes to have fun in simplest ways,) just, well one day as I was chatting with her through i/m-(we hardly do, because she's busy with her military education) onced just balantly after say we greeted asked if I had a crush on her, and I thought it was a joke-her being free spirited and all, but I guess it wasn't and I was floored, and then I was pissed. I asked her why she would say something like that, and she said it was because of some class she's taking-bio, where she learned the decripstions/actions of such, and I fitted them . She never apologized, and I know she knew I was upset, I never again mentioned it to her, and just forgave. But, ever since that incident, I don't view her the same-She knew I was into boys, and I've never made a pass-or would.

My husband ,with whom I've never had a fight, and always has a peaceful character ,suddenly after seven years ,keeps me up until 4:30 in the morning finding fault ,finger pointing, finding everything I've ever done wrong ,Stuff like reading a book and not paying attention to him or my clothes aren't organized well enough ,staying up later than him ,three times ,basically stuff like not kissing his *** ,and I never have ,we've alway's been equals and best friends .When I tried to answer one of his comments he just cut me off so I just listened and wondered where this is coming from,And I remembered an x that would do this to justify some crappy thing that was about to happen .What do you think?

I had a dream about my friend (the one i like). We were at school and its next year. I hadnt seen anyone i knew at all that day. Then Walking to my next class i saw her, bathed in rays of sunshine. She came over to me and said that she hadnt seen anyone she knew until now. It turned out that we had the next class together. So we were in class, it was a strange room with no desks or chairs there were just pillows and beanbags. So we started talking and catching up. We were getting close to eachother. and i looked into her eyes and they were different than B4. I leaned in to kiss her but she dissapeared. Then I woke up. Does anybody have any idea what this means?

I'm looking for serious answers here. Nothing along the lines of "duh" or "of course".

I'm just wondering, because I haven't been able to find a woman who thinks that it's important for a man to live his life with integrity. Most women that I know think that it's great when a man is unfaithful, lazy, bullying, and dishonest in general. They view him as being a "bad boy" who has "edge" and is a "challenge".

On the other hand, a man who is confident, mentally and physically healthy, a community leader, intelligent, romantic, honest, and would be a devoted husband and father, is seen as "boring" and "too nice".

Why is this? Do these women have low self-esteem and think that they don't deserve better . . . or, do men of integrity have to start being losers in order for women to appreciate them?

I look forward to your intelligent and well-thought-out answers.

I know that some believe that God commands us to not fight evil, though I couldn't disagree more strongly, but how do people justify it in their hearts?

I have seen spouse's abuse their partners without fight or flight. I have seen parents abuse their children only to have the children condemn themselves for it and seek their parents' love even more. I have seen girlfriends stay with abusive guys, and justify the violence and condescension or diminish the evil of it, even to great extremes. And so for decades now my heart continually cries out to them, screaming, "Why?!" How do people justify it enough to subject themselves to more without either fighting it or fleeing it?

PS: I need an answer more comprehensive and understandable than because that's what they were taught, or they know of no other way/path. There has got to be more of an answer to it than because they are nothing without the abuse; they are nothing with the abuse. So what gives?

There's this guy I like, a lot. For several years he and I have flirted with each other. However, the timing was never right. He was with someone and I was with someone. Then, last year, I broke up with my boyfriend, which he didn't know about, and he soon told me that he was ending his marriage, with his wife. I told him I was interested. At first, I thought he was interested. He even said he was. Then, pretty quickly, he began acting like he wasn't. He told me he didn't want to ruin our friendship. That he respected me. And didn't just want to have a fling with me. Which was cool. So, we stayed friends. The flirting slowed down. Now he's back to flirting big time with me all over again. Hinting around about things. I laugh and tell him to stop playing games. That he's full of BS. Yet, he continues. He also tells me; You never know. What should I make of this? Naturally, I'm confused and will approach anything regarding more than a friendship, with him, cautiously. What do you think ?

Everyday I shop. If I can't make it to the mall or a dep. store I get online and shop from home. I have no money so I'm constantly going into debt. Everything I buy is put onto credit cards or small bank loans. Everyone says I have a problem but I don't think I do. I just need someone else's opinion. Am I addicted to shopping???

First, to clear this up, not actively trying to harm myself ... so that's not the issue. I guess, in thinking about past things i've tried, i'm simply trying to figure out is there an actual best way to leave a note ... For those that answer, if possible, can you describe why the choice is the preferable way, thanks.

I'm 17 years old, and yet I still can't do things that children can do. I never do anything right, my mother constantly tells me I'm stupid, so I was wondering if it's possible for me to function like a normal person. I am getting all A's and B's in Advanced Placement courses, so I'm hoping that there's hope for me... It's the little things that get me down:
