Hmmm...tough question. I'm more of a conflict theorist than a functionalist but I'll try my best.

The functionalist perspective would argue that gender serves a much needed purpose in society. By assigning different roles to gender you ensure that all aspects of society are taken care of. For example, men work and women raise kids. If everyone learned to accept their role in society, everyone would be much happier (a grin and bear attitude)

the conflict perspective would say that the hegemonic (dominant) gender, males in the US, hold down other genders (women, intersexed, etc.) for their own purposes. Conflict theory is most often associated with class, where the lower classes are exploited for the purposes of the upper classes. the same can be said for gender issues. Those in power want to stay in power and since the male gender has all the power, they will exploit those in other genders in order to remain on top. (I'm not male bashing, just explaining the views of the conflict perspective)
