The benefits are increased productivity in the work place.

At home...all your electronic gadgets do most of the work for you so that you have more time for leisure.

Progress in medecine. People now live longer.

However...modern technology has also created problems

As technology in the work place replaced people...those people lost their job.

On the home front...people with more time on their hand spend that time watching television or surfing the internet instead of doing something productive with their life.

People living longer because of new medecine put an extra economic burden on society as most older people don't have the revenue to pay for that medecine.

All in all...it is 50% good and 50% bad...which bring you back to square one. We are just fooling ourselve into believing that we are better off. Yes our life is different to what it was 40 years ago...but we are paying a high price for it.
