The question of how certain people can detect underground drinking water using just a simple forked stick has fascinated me for a long time. Is there any scientific explanation for how this works?

I realise that plants are a high % water (which is of course added through rain/watering), but how do plants develop so much plant matter from so little soil? Where does the mass come from, as the soil never reduces? A fuschia in my garden has a tiny pot with very little soil, but has developed a space-hopper sized amount of foliage...where does it come from?!!

The latent heat of fusion (solid become liquid) for ice is 79.8 cal/gram. How much ice can we melt with 1000 calories of heat?
(a)Read the introduction carefully. Identify the key pieces of information required to solve this problem.
(b)Identify the extraneous information in the background reading
c) Explain your strategy for solving this problem.
(d)Solve the problem. How much ice can you melt with 1000 calories of heat?
Hints:

The formula is:
The amount of heat = (mass of the material) x (latent heat of fusion):
Q = mLf
where Q is the amount of heat in calories;
m is the mass of the material in grams;
Lf is the latent heat of fusion in calories/gram.

In this problem, you are provided the amount of heat, Q, and the latent heat of fusion, Lf. You will have to rearrange this equation and solve it for mass, m.

Which would require more heat, melting 500 g of 0 C ice or turning 500 g of 100 C water into steam?
A 500 g sample of an unknown material requires 750 calories of heat to raise its temperature by 50 C. Use Equation (1) and Table 6.1 to identify the material.The formula used to calculate the amount of heat required to heat the material without phase change is:

Amount of heat required = (specific heat capacity) x (mass of the material) x (change in temperature)

or

Q = C * m * ∆T

where C is the specific heat capacity of the material in cal/g 0C;
m is the mass of the material in grams;
∆T is the temperature change, 0C.

suppose I got a gas which has a break down voltage of 40000V at 1 inch. Now suppose i have two plates facing each other one is at 25000v other is neutral and they are at 1 inch away. Now suppose the neutral plate gas induced with 20000v (not 25000 because of the distance factor). The gas will reach its break down voltage and charge will leak...right?

Now suppose i increase the distance to 2 inch....and still i have 25000v in one plate. now will the induced charge on the neutral plate will become 10000v?...and also for that distance will the breakdown voltage increase to double...that is 40000v?

A parametrization is given for a curve.
(a) what are the initial and terminal points, if any? Indicate the direction in which the curve is traced.
(b) Find a Cartesian equation for a curve that contains the parametrized curve. What portion of the graph of the Cartesian equation is traced by the parametrized curve ?
Is it right that the initial point is (1,0) and the terminal point is (-1,0)??
and i also have to graph it, i can do that by using a grapher but is there a way that i can do it without a grapher ??
Thanks soooooooo much

Obviously this occured due to acid-base neutralization, but would it also occur if Orange juice was substituted for the Ammonia?
