Canada's last known surviving First World War veteran had an early birthday celebration in Spokane, Wash., on Wednesday with friends, family and a letter from the Queen.
Surrounded by family and reporters, John Babcock opened a package of birthday wishes that B.C. MP James Moore brought from Canada.
Included in the parcel were letters of congratulations from Queen Elizabeth and Governor General Michaëlle Jean and a tie with red poppies from Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Babcock was born July 23, 1900, on an Ontario farm, and enlisted at the age of 15. His youth meant he couldn't go to the front lines in France, so he was put in the Boy's Battalion doing drills all day long. The war ended before he turned 18. He says he never felt like "a real soldier."
Babcock became an American citizen in the 1920s and joined the U.S. army.

Republicans are called war mongerer's, by Liberals. But that just isn't right is it? Would Liberals of today call Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, John Adams, John Hancock, Abraham Lincoln, Dwight Eisenhower, Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin D. Roosevelt, etc. war mongerer's?
Where would America be, if we had never gone to war?

President Bush claims that we should wait until September, when General Petraeus will deliver an evaluation of the situation in Iraq, before doing anything else, apparently. Why is this going to take until September?

Why not just have a binding referendum State by State Province by Province on the issue and make the lobby groups lobby the public instead of the government ?

This wouldn't be government by referendum it would be a referendum on key issues that really should be decided by the people

Don't like the results ? Move to another State Province where your views are more reflected in the populus -

This would be democracy at work ?

So what stops it from happening the government is afraid you'd vote the wrong way ?

Dear Mr. Swanson:

Thank you for contacting me regarding President Bush’s decision to commute Scooter Libby’s prison sentence – a decision I disagree with.
Â
Although the U.S. Constitution gives the president this power, I believe the vice president’s former chief of staff should have been held accountable for perjury, obstruction of justice and false statements in connection with the federal investigation into the leak of a CIA agent's identity.
Â
The incident was an affront to the men and women who sometimes must put their lives on the line in our country’s intelligence service.
Â
Again, I appreciate your interest in the issue. And, please don’t hesitate to contact me in the future on this or any other matter.

Obama says "We cannot win a war against the terrorists if we're on the wrong battlefield."

Hmm, which battlefield would Obama prefer - US soil?

Should we resurrect the music to keep it real?Song: Fighting Side Of Me Tab

The Fightin' Side Of Me
Written and performed by Merle Haggard
c1970 Tree Publishing C., Inc.

Verse 1:
D A7
I hear people talking bad about the way they have to live here in this country.
D
Harpin' on the wars we fight gripin' 'bout the way things ought to be.
A7
I don't mind them switchin' sides and standin' up for things they beleive in,

When they're runnin' down our country man,
D
They're walkin' on The Fightin' Fide Of Me.

Chorus
A7 D A7
They're walkin' on The Fightin' Side Of Me.
A G D
Runnin' down a way of life our fightin' men have fought and died to keep,

If you don't love it, leave it,
D7 G
Let this song that I'm singin' be a warnin',
A7
When you're runnin' down our country (hoss - 1st // man - 2d)
D
You're walkin' on The Fightin' Side Of Me.

Verse 2:

I read about some squirley guy
Who claims that he just don't beleive in fightin',
And I wonder just how long the rest of us can count on bein' free.
They love our milk and honey but they preach about some other way of livin',
When they're runnin' down our country man
They're walkin' on The Fightin' Side Of Me.

Chorus

As for how long we have been in Iraq, the cost of a war is not measured in time. It is measured in lives lost.

While our media are impatiently waiting for the 4,000th American death in Iraq that they can trumpet, and rub our noses in — in the name of “honoring the troops” — we need to understand that casualty rates in Iraq are low, as wars go.

If and when that 4,000th American death in Iraq is reached, we need to recall that more Marines than that were lost taking one island in the Pacific during World War II.

During the Civil War, more than twice as many Union soldiers as that were killed — in one day — at the battle of Shiloh, and again at Gettysburg.

The “war on terror” is a misleading phrase. It is the terrorists’ war against us — and it is not something that we can unilaterally call off. Our only choice is where to fight it, over there or over here.
