That's like comparing apples and honda civics -- both come in green or red, but otherwise.....

Socialism is an economic model, that says primary resource production (farms, factories, etc.) should be owned by the state/govt, but allowing for private ownership of other property. Socialism is a mid-point between capitalism (all private ownership) and communism (no private ownership).

Democracy is a political model that says the citizenry (population) should have final political power in the long run. It may be pure (polyarchal) democracy, where everyone votes on every issue, or a democratic republic, where people vote for leaders who make the day-to-day decisions. Democracy oppose fascism, which is where the people have no say in the political process.

Any of the above economic models can exist in any of the above political models. So, you can just as easily have democratic communism or socialism as you an have fascist capitalism. One has nothing to do with the others.

The Democrats ARE socialists. The other main school of thought are the Republicans, who are neither Democrats nor socialists. They're capitalists.

socialism is an economic school of thought not a political one. There are many countries that are democratic yet have socialist structures and values.
There are also many non socialist states that are very un-democratic.
