Military - June 2006

Sure, many veterans back in the times of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War fought for American ideals and really wanted to protect their country. But, today, most soldiers are not out there for altruistic reasons or lofty goals. They are out there to earn money for college or because they couldn't find another job that paid as well. Why isn't this the same as the guy working for the government as a janitor, for example? The janitor is there to earn money and he is providing a vital service to the country, just the same as soldiers.

This is not meant to bash those men and women who choose the career path of a soldier. I think that they are vital to the operation of our country. I just don't understand why they are lavished with more praise than anyone else that provides a good service to the country.

How are you going to keep American citizens safe if you do not want to fight? If there is another person out there that wants to kill you, do you really think that talking to them will change their mind? I don't understand why some people think that others have the right to hate us and the right to kill us. Just having the idea of killing or planning to kill someone should cause you to lose your right to live free like everyone else. It isn't worth it to give someone like that a chance - one time is all they need to wipe out innocent people. Why can't America support the war on terror? These people obviously do not want to talk if they are hiding out or bombing our country. Would you be willing to fight someone that wants to kill you, one on one, in order to keep your right to live and breathe? If not, then someone else must do it for you. How else can you keep America safe?

As of late more headlines have been popping up about the missile capabilities of North Korea. More and more people seem to think North Korea as going to send some kind of attack on someone. My question is can a war with large scale weapons really exist. Honestly we have never gone to war with a country who had the capability to launch a nuclear bomb. Do nuclear weapons keep us in an ongoing cold war? Kind of a hostile peace.
