I would choose either the S&W or the Colt for 1 reason: Both are americian and both have had well over 100 years in hand gun development. As for Brettea, Kimber, Glock, and Saco, I could not depend on those to truly take out my enemy. Now, with that said, I still believe the best in personal firepower is the S&W .44

A lot depends on your personal preference of weapon and choice of calliber. Are you looking for a 1911 style 9mm weapon? Kimber also offers a .40 and .45 ACP. All three models have received high marks for performance. A lot also depends on how much you want to spend. A top of the line Kimber will run $1200-1500, but some of the other models listed above can be had for less than $1000.

I am a big fan of the Glock, and the rigorous testing each model is put through before it is sold to the public, I also like the trigger safety. The Smith & Wesson is a nice gun also the military probably chooses the S&W because it is cheaper.

I would advise you to go out to a local shooting range and see for yourself what the difference is. Both Kember and Beretta are nice guns.
Though S&W is a great revolver (of which i carry a 37 every single day)...the semi-auto's leave some room for improvement!
Try the glock... by far the best option in my oppinon!

you should go find a local gun store that has a range. most of them will let you rent there used firearms. it is best to get a weapon in your hands, before you buy, it is better still to fire it.
what i would pick would depend on what i wanted it for. if it is for target shooting, i would get a .22 LR, for home defense i would prefer a shotgun.
do not just follow name brands, there are some of the big names with lesser weapons than the little ones.

Got to go for the Glock. I know of an instance where one was recovered from the bottom of San Francisco Bay after nine months, the dude shook it out and shot it. Can't beat that.

I would have to go for the Glock 40 or 9mm. They are very accurate and low maintanance.
