WASHINGTON, Dec. 11 — The United States Sentencing Commission voted unanimously today to lighten punishments retroactively for crimes related to crack cocaine, a decision that could affect some 19,500 federal inmates.

The decision, which was made over the objections of the Bush administration, takes effect on March 3, 2008, and it will not mean automatic release for those serving time. But it does open the door for them to apply for sentence adjustments and possible earlier release.

The sentencing commission earlier had said that applying its new guidelines retroactively could reduce the average sentence by about 27 months and that about 2,500 prisoners could be released within one year. The remaining eligible inmates could receive proportional reductions, depending on the length of their sentences, with most getting fewer than 24 months off, but some getting 49 months or more trimmed from their sentences.

No insults intended or requested! I simply would like some enlightenment.

Several months ago, they had the chance to squash this "thing"

Instead they yelled pointed their fingers at it and threw money at it (almost $4B), then continued to yell and point their fingers at it.

I stand perplexed. Why would they take this possition? I was handed to them on a silver platter with a knife stuck in it.

I don't know everything, but I WOULD like some Clarification on this to keep me up to speed.

My brother went online to look for a car loan since he has bad credit. A car dealer in Mahwah New Jersey (we are in New York) responded and told him to "come on in" SO he went in, they took his trade with a quoted value of 2K. Then they gave him a 2006 Nissan Sentra and stated he had the loan for the car. They had a 10 day temporary registration on it and let that lapse stating they were still trying to register it? Until they finally got that and then the REPOSSES the car stating they couldn't get the loan to go through << Mind you this was WITHOUT warning! ANd now they will not return his trade or compensate him for the quoted value on the trade Now they WON"T RETURN HIS CALLS! I am guessing a lawyer is in order??... but would LOVE to hear what everyopne has to say! :)

If you think it's a good and effective way to get information from someone... would you object to your child's school water-boarding your child in order to get information out of him or her?

After all, it's just a little discomfort, right? And it works? So why not do it to our kids?

That would pull in taxes from all workers. Under the table workers, drug dealers, and anyone making money by other illegal methods. And everyone would pay per their income (how much they buy).

Satellite dish, 18 month contract, if you cancel you pay 18 dollars a month. ADT three year contract, if you cancel you pay 14 dolllars a month. Earthlink, 1 year contract if you cancel before you pay 30 dollars. What the heck is going on? Years ago you didn't want service any longer, then you cancelled and that was it. This is just bull#### no sense. The sad thing is that no contract no service, and I really need all these services. I guess they take advantage of the fact people need them. What can be done to go back as before?

Someone I know was sent to jail for breaking and entering, stolen property and a weapons charge (22 rifle wan't his) for shooting off up north. The judge gave him 8 months then put it down to 5 months and 100 days on good behavior.
He is going for parole on Thursday. This guy has only been in jail since October 30th/2007...which means if he gets out on parole, he would of only served 49 days in jail for his offences. Is this not ridiculous? I know they frown on weapons, so would that hold him back from getting paroled on the 19th of this month? Need some imput here guys. He's had other B&E charges in the past too,.....would they really release him after only serving 49 bluddy days???

Listen, if your choice of action is to run around like a chicken with your head cut off or to drop to your knees and open your mouth thats fine by me; its your choice. But as for me I want to be able to protect myself from these little bastards. I want to be able to protect my wife and my children. Why shouldnt anyone upon a background check, training and extensive due process be able to carry a gun legally anywhere?
