He advocated a small federal government and state's rights, yet bought the Louisiana Territory as President which only empowered the national government. Also, of course, he owned slaves while writing the Declaration of Independence.

He wanted to end slavery, but never had the guts to free his own slaves.

How he's a hypocrite? well...he was "opposed to slavery" but owned a lot of slaves himself. Unlike Washington, he did not even free most of his slaves before his death. He was George Washington's secretary of state once, yet he spread rumors about him at his back. He "despised" aristocracy and luxury, yet he's an art collector, wine lover and an epicure.

There's a lot of sources on him being a hypocrite. Just search google and they'll pop up. The one listed in my "sources" is probably the best one to go. You can find arguments and primary documents on both sides to help you prepare for the debate. Good luck!

When Jefferson made the Louissiana purchase he knew it was unconstitutional for him to make the decision without putting it through congress. Jefferson was against unconstitutional institutions such as Andrew Jackson's National Bank, and believed in a strict interpretation of the constitution. According to strict interpretation of the constitution he did not have the power to buy the Louissiana Territory, but he did not have time to put the idea through congress and get it passed. So, he bought it from France arguing that it was for the betterment of the people. This is hypocritical because for a long time he fought Andrew Jackson's national bank, believing it unconstitutional, and then Jefferson went and did something totally unconstitutional himself.

Well, you could probably start by reading your high school history book, but the first thing that should come to mind is his major role in penning the Constitution and Bill of Rights, yet he was a slave owner.
