The West Wing is not a comfortable place these days. No one inside the White House knows what the rules are anymore. The White House is even alienating its friends. It looks like the wheels are coming off. When you are in trouble, every little pebble becomes a giant rock, then a boulder heading downhill**....

In 'The Sunday Times" she is said to be considering giving up her part time GP position to become the person to represent child welfare and protection against peodophiles.
Now, I for one find this offensive.
I always lock up my home when I leave it so my valuables are safe.
I would not want someone to represent house security who always left their doors unlocked. I would not trust their opinion.
How is she fit to do take on this job? She neglected her children, or has she forgotten that already. How can she advise or be in the position to help anyone?

2) How can these two people almost make a celebration out of the 50th day their daughter has gone missing. Why are they preparing for things, like large concerts with Elton John? These things will take a while to organise. Do they not expect Madeline to be found for some time then?

There are a lot of macho and aggresive comments on here about Islam and Iraq and terrorists and so on....

This weekend we are remembering the Falklands war and I heard yesterday that Britain lost 255 service personel during the war, but that 300 ex soldiers have since commited suicide because of what they went through there.

Should we challenge some of the gung ho nonsense we see written on this site?

I have seen a lotof people showing no sympathy for Denise Fergus (formerly Denise Bulger), whose toddler was murdered in a horrible manner. The majority of people seem to support the poor woman, but there has always been an element of dissent, which has surprised me. Why do so many people take this attitude?

Was disbarment enough for his role in the Duke LAX case, or does he deserve more? If so, what does he deserve? What about the accuser?

This is old news, but I was curious as to what people think about Mary Bell.

For anyone who doesn't know, Bell killed a 3 year old child in 1968 when she herself was 11. Bell's mother, a prostitute, tried to murder her 4 times when she was a kid and regularly 'rented' her to customers, which was obviously seen as a cause of her diagnosed psychopathy. She was rehabilitated and freed, and is now 50.

Several years ago the press found her, Bell was released from custody in 1980 and was granted anonymity to start a new life with her daughter, born in 1984. This daughter did not know of her mother's past until Bell's location was discovered by reporters: she and her mother had to leave their house with bed sheets over their heads. The daughter's anonymity was originally protected until she reached the age of 18. However, on May 21, 2003, Bell won a High Court battle to have her own anonymity and that of her daughter extended for life.

On Iraq, Bush seemed to be practically the last man in America to realize his military strategy was failing*. Once inside the charmed Bush circle, people tend to stay there, and rise to the level of their incompetence*. The Administration has also overvalued loyalty ,tending to shut out other talented people and giving loyalists jobs for which they might not be suited*. Excessive loyalty only enables drift and dysfunction*. Bush's reflex to stand by his man points to a key weakness in his Management style*. Politically, it can put Bush in the position of embracing failure*. Bush's management problems begin with the way he evaluates and values people*. After 9/11, Bush embraced the CIA and eschewed any finger pointing after the massive intelligence failure that contributed to 9/11*. his Presidency has sustained damage from which it may never recover*. It's no wonder he doesn't read newspapers*.

...not unrecalcitrant 'feudal' overlords (the British Imperials) readying themselves to leave.

By what right, or sense of justice, do they demand the Palestinians forswear violence?

What modern state, apart from only one I can think of (Butan?), would even consider this suggestion without laughter ringing around the agora?

Not to mention Iran also. Now it seems like the whole Middle East is coming apart since we ousted Saddam from power. Wasn't it more peaceful when Saddam was in control? Isn't it obvious that Saddam had the fanatics and all other middle east on tippy toe, including Iran? And for those who complained that Saddam gased his own people is justified for us to kill over 600,000 more Iraqies from Bushe's war and not to mention over 5000 U.S. troops and Allied soldiers? Was this war a mistake or a HUGE mistake?

What are the chances that the violent divisions between Hamas and Fatah and the likelihood of a new, totally non-Hamas government will advance the Palestinian cause in the medium to long term ? Or conversely that will they worsen it - or make no difference ?

This is an open question. There are no insinuations or assumptions, pro- or anti-Hamas or Fatah, behind it.

what's the deal ? China is funding our war basically with all the money we've borrowed from them, yet at the same time I've read reports on China supposedly suppying anti-aircraft missles and other arms to Iran...Can anyone find a reason why they would do this? Maybe they want to gain control in the mid-east.
