This article by Stefanie Marsh appeared in the Times - I hope this link works but I am also reproducing parts of it below.... finally a journalist starts to question the mass, mawkish hysteria of the British public ....

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_contributors/article1865968.ece

……..My mood doesn’t do a U-turn every time Cuddle Cat is mentioned on ITV News. I care, of course I care, it would be inhuman not to, but if you really want to know, I think the public references to a private thing such as a child’s soft toy are in poor taste, as are the overfamiliar abbreviation of the girl’s name to bring us closer to the scene of this wretched mystery. Worse than the abbreviations are the people who correct the abbreviators: “It’s Madeleine, not Maddy. That’s what the parents call her,” in an offended tone as if they know her, or have been personally affected. People talk about “feeling the McCanns’ pain”, but we do not………..Where the welfare of a child is concerned one must, in Britain, now be obsessed – especially when there is a whiff of abuse. And not merely obsessed but hysterically, visibly, mawkishly so. Once you are obsessed, it is necessary to wear your hysteria on your sleeve. Or, as MPs did with yellow ribbons, on your lapel. More important still is the need to reassure yourself that everybody else feels the same. That the vicarious worrying is not just normal behaviour but required. There is a tyranny here………………Misery Lit, ie, memoirs of child abuse, “have emerged as the liveliest new category of books”, reports The Bookseller.Five to ten of these books come out every month. A high-ranking publisher friend tells me that the books’ lurid titles are made up at brain-storming meetings before the manuscript has been seen or in some cases, written.
So we have: Please Daddy, No; A Child Called “It”; Don’t Tell Mummy: A True Story of the Ultimate Betrayal; A Girl Called Karen: A True Story of Sexual Abuse and Resilience; and Damagedto name a handful. The stand-out Mis Lit success story, Sickened: The True Story of a Lost Childhood, has sold 500,000 copies. Of the top 100 bestselling paperbacks in 2006, 11 were misery memoirs; with total sales of 1.9 million copies.
Why are these books so popular? Like the McCann case they deliver a predictable emotional charge and allow the reader to experience a strong sense of vicarious self-pity.

Should we be expecting fish fever or pork pox in the near future?

The bird flu was supposed to be the next pandemic yet it and mad cow disease have disappeared from all news outlets.

We could let third world countries bid on sending their citizens to Iraq for us. Sure they wouldn't be great fighters but its the old strength in numbers theory. At the very least they would dilute the terrorist and steal their day jobs.

I dont understand why it would be catastrophic to the church if Jesus were married. I think what would be more catastrophic is to remind people that he was Jewish and he never renounced his religion. Besides Jewish men are not supposed to wear beards till they are married and every rendering (pictures) of Jesus we have show him with a beard.?? Thank you in advance for your opinions.

quoting ap wire and hillary...
As a senator from New York, "I have seen first hand the terrible damage that can be inflicted on our country by a small band of terrorists."

Still, she said, "I believe we are safer than we were."

Obvouisly by making that statement Hillary admits to liberal extremists Bush was right.

1.) knowing we needed to defend ourselves, isnt it clear surrender has no justification.
2.) how can she expect any sober sane individual to elect her in this country when her party knowingly and willingly jeapordizes the safety of our troops for millions of dollars to spend on peanut storage and other pork barrel projects.
3.)now that the extremists have begun to understand their error to a point, wouldnt it be nice to just get the xxx out of the way and let the conservatives who understand the threat of al qaeda and jihad is real simply finish the job without threat, again in september of leaving our soldiers vulnerable for sake of political gain and tax dollars

I dont understand it. Alot of people assosiate the radical terrorists with the religion of Islam, becuase these terrorists HAPPEN to be muslim.
There are loads of Bhuddist and Christian and Hinu etc terrorists.
So if you need to make a statement of a religion being evil, be fair and say all of religions are evil.cos they are all alike.
EVERY religion is basicly the same, plus or minus a few stories...

I just dont get it...can any of you help me out?

It has been revealed today that the money raised from Maddy;s fund is already helping OTHER kids that are missing, So will you people who keep having a go at Maddy's parents take note??

I doubt it, It will stop the said people being so "big" and "clever"

You all said it was all about them and they have now shown different, As i have said before they know they did wrong and maybe the way they have gone about it is wrong, but to them it obviously feels right!

So fair play to them, we all hope she is found safe and well.

If it was your kid missing (whatever the circumstances) you would also want as much publicity as the McCanns are achieving and this fund may end up helping 1000's of kids in the coming years

Please Star If you agree

I will ignore all nasty responses as I am simply asking a question nothing more. I am British by the way but have travelled around the USA where their attitude seems to be a bit more pro-active when it comes to child care.

I have looked at many, many forums both British and American and whilst the American forums condemn the actions of the McCanns the British forums for the most part seem to either want to disguise that this has happened, state that it was a little error, or simply overlook the point completely by saying "what is done is done".

I am not pro or anti anything. I am asking a question and abusive responses which I have seen a lot of on this forum will simply be ignored..

The question again is do you feel it is ok to leave children under a certain age by themselves. If so under what circumstances?? I have my own thoughts on this matter ...

Why does the UK have worthless tabloid rags (aka 'newspapers') with these titles? Why aren't there any called The Earth? The Moon? Why is this galactic prejudice tolerated?

(Yes, it's a ridiculous question, but it makes a change from The McCanns, doesn't it?)

I've been in the work force since i was 16. the only time i wasn't involved in some weird drama was when i worked with a bunch of men at a film editing department (that is after the crazy woman who was there before me was fired). following on from a question posted by Marie S about a Maddy day, I hunted around the for the article about this.

The article is here:

I think the article speaks for itself and about how tasteless this campaign has become ......... maybe they will have Madeleine Dolls in shops in time for Christmas.
