I don't think that Madeleine should be ignored, but I do feel that the way that the press and a section of the public are focusing on this one case is insulting and derogatory to all of the other children who have gone missing.
It is too simplistic to just blame the press - as you point out their aim is to sell copy... it is about supply and demand. Unfortunately the public are generally not interested in hearing about every child who vanishes - they read the story, say 'how sad' and turn straight to the sports pages. If the public were this interested in missing children as a whole, then the press would reflect that interest.
Sadly that simply isn't the case and when people point out that hundreds of other children have gone missing in the month since Madeleine disappeared, what they are really trying to say is not 'ignore Madeleine', but 'please get some perspective on this and extend your compassion and practical help to all children in this position because they are just as deserving'.
I see a lot of posters defending the McCanns by claiming that the publicity they are drumming up is helping all missing children, but I see no actual proof of that being so... the papers give these disappearances no more copy than they ever did and donations to Missing Persons or Childrens Charities has not risen at all.
The McCann parents were in a financial and social position to make this into the media circus that it has become - if they were as compassionate as most of their supporters claim to be, then they could just as easily have gained the world press coverage and international awareness that they currently have, without appropriating £600,000 into a private company for their own use.
They could easily have diverted those funds to a recognised, registered charity which would benefit more of the missing children than the odd one or two who have re-appeared during their campaign. If you read the aims of their company you will see that there is no chance that any of this money will ever be used to help other people, their brief is far too broad to allow for that to happen.

I don't think that is the case - I think it is more to do with the manner in which the McCann parents are going about this and the way they conduct themselves.
Faith: I have read a number of your answers lately on the Madeleine topic. Apart from the fact that you appear to be somewhat blindfolded, I think you are usually one of the more courteous posters amongst those that profess to support the McCann parents. Therefore, somewhat surprised at your retort to Rosie who made an extremely valid point, I felt.
Also, for you to say that the only justifiable gripe against the now infamous pair is that they left their kids alone is incredibly naive. They like the word NAIVE as well. Come on, take your tinted sunglasses off for a second and admit that there are a NUMBER of things the McCanns and their entourage have done wrong from DAY ONE. You also cannot surely condone their lies and deceit?
Or maybe you do.
ADDITION : Jane Doe: What an eloquent, thought-provoking, intuitive, insightful post. This is the reason I still come on this forum - to read gems like that answer. Sincere thanks - I wish others entered into this dialogue in such a manner. It's refreshing to see that YA still has a number of intelligent individuals prepared to state their case - all you abusive finger pointers, please take note...

Just responding to a previous awnser. I never knew that maddie was middle class when I heard it on the news that she was missing I just knew how awful it must be for maddie and her family and thats why I took a intrest in it. I wish that no children will ever go missing and the huge publicity that maddie is getting is not only good for her but for other missing children. Ive been on several websites since maddies disaparance about missing children and wanted sex offenders. Of course the media cant show every missing girl as much in the news as maddie. But maby if they catch the people you did this and find maddie they find other missing children aswelll

The McCanns have managed to deflect their culpability to initiating a fresh campaign about missing children - well, that is their intent ostensibly to keep them from prosecution. Except it isn't working. You really shouldn't use a child's life to start your own circus to save your hides; it's unethical, morally corrupt and distinctly unpalatable to decent people.
When I see Gerry McCann I feel sick, so maybe his desperation to exonerate him and his compliant Mrs is having the reverse effect, and judging by many on here he ought to go into the sick bag business (PLC, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED)

Regardless of all the flak, Madeliene's parents get (i believe the only flak justifiable is about leaving the babies alone), its up to the parents, family & friends to keep missing children in the limelight. The only reason the media started giving Madeleine such huge coverage is 'cos Madeleine's family raised such a hue & cry about it. Different folks react differently. Some parents hire PIs & prefer not to get into the media circus. Maddie's family believe otherwise. Each to his own. Now, since she has touched practically the whole world, naturally the media will continue to feature her. God bless her & all missing childrens & bring them home.
