Since the last light snowfall (8 days ago) there has been a growing wet spot on my and my neighbors sidewalk, wondering if it is an issue? The only similarity is that we both have trees in the front of our property. We live in southern NY, Queens County and this has never been an issue during other months.

I rent a room in a house full of college students, and sometimes the hall light wakes me up because it comes into my room through the cracks around the door.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to put around the door/doorframe to keep as much light out as possible?

today i had some guy come out and look at the house. he said that my insalation is bad and we have to much humididy in the house. Right now its so cold outside the windows get water stuff on them so i put plastic over the windows to keep it warmer in the house and try to make it stop makin water on the inside window. Well the water is coming thru the plastic onto the floor of the house. What should i do until i get the insalation replaced to keep the water from dripping onto the hosue floor?

I was removing an old dishwasher and was too lazy to go to the electric meter box of the house and locate the circuit breaker. Instead, I "shorted out" the "hot wire" to ground with a screw driver hoping to trigger the circuit breaker off. Instead, a piece of the copper wire melted onto the screw driver and the point of the screw driver was ruined. The circuit breaker did not shut off and the wire remained energized.
I am now worried that the circuit breaker is not functioning properly. Is there a way to test a circuit breaker to make sure it functioning properly?

We've been burning for over 2 months now, and we haven't had a problem till just last Wednesday when it started to snow. The problem we are having is it's billowing smoke into the house but only when we open wood burner to put wood into it. We have checked the flue is open, there is no blockage in the chimney or pipes, and all the vents in the burner are clear. The logs usually burn really hot but since Wednesday they only seem to smolder and burn really slowly. Not only does the flue fail to draw at the beginning , but it also is failing to draw after the fires been burning for a couple hours.

okay i was just in the kitchen baking a pumpkin pie and near the kitchen we have a sliding glass door. outside the door we have a porch that is screened in and i thought i heard one of the oustide doors (on the porch) open, and so i stopped moving and i heard it close. i am positive that it did, and i didnt imagine it. the sliding door was open cuz we live in florida so we were getting a breeze and after i heard the door close i ran into my bedroom and locked the door. we have security cameras but for some reason none of them are working. i am so freaked out. what would you do?

or do you think its just paranoia cuz i just saw some scary movies? i know for a fact that the door opened and closed though.

When filling a bath tub the water runs for a few minutes but then with a loud thump or hammering sound stops running.

If I turn off the handles, wait a moment and turn them on it will run a few seconds before doing the same thing.

The same thing happens if I use, either or both of the handles.

The two valves are connected to a Tee which is connected to a 3/4inch washing machine hose which is connected to the tub. The bath tub has a integrated fiberglass waterfall spout with a 3/4 threaded connection.

The noise is loud. I cannot tell if it is in the tub or behind it, but I suspect it is behind it.

The access panel does not give me access to this side of the tub.

Sometimes it leaks a trickle, but most of the time it shuts off completely.

It is upstairs, all of the other faucets, sinks, toilets work fine. Water pressure seems fine. Connected to city, not well.

Thanks thanks thanks!

Because it is so cold outside, when I light the fireplace the cold air is rushing down the chimney and into the house making it very smoky. Once the air is heated, 10 min or so, the flow reverses and heads back up the chimney. How do I light a fire without getting the smoke in my house?

yes its clean and the flu (sp?) is open.

I have a door knob that will open the door on the inside in both the locked and unlocked position. If I am not careful to check both sides, I can get locked out. Is there a way to change it to feel locked on BOTH sides? It is a new Schlage lock.

last night i walked by it and i could hear a drip inside of it.. and the water was cooling off.. so i looked in the botom where the pilot light is and there was a puddle of water on to of the burner inside.. there was a drip over top inside .it looked like the water was coming from the middle.. the valve on the side was changed this year.. so its not that.. and the inlet and outlet on the top are fine.. where could the water come from? and also i shut of the gas "its only gas" but i still have cold water in it. its about 40 psi.. could it explode with no heat? and it seemd like after the heat was off the leak stoped. whats going on?

I smell propane around my hot water heater. I called my supplier and they told me it would cost $98 per. hour to come to my house. I'm on a fixed income and cannot afford this. It seems to me whoever you buy fuel from should be responsible for checking and maybe even fixing leaks. Anyone have any insight to my problem?
(I have been keeping it off & turning it on when we need hot water). Also i get HEAP grants to help pay for my fuel. can HEAP help? I have childeren in the house also.

Hi, I live in my a three story house and part of my front yard (about 10 ft. by 10 ft) and a little bit of my basement has termites. The guy told me the price would be.
1600 for the first extermination.
Then, for the next five years, he has to come every 3 months to do something which costs 120. so total, it would be 2400.
then at the end of the five years, i would need to do another final extermination which is another 1600. Is all this actually necessary or is he just trying to get extra money?
so the final price is 5600.

I just moved into a duplex and I can hear everything through a shared bedroom wall. The duplex used to be a 1 bedroom, but the owners took the master bedroom from next door and split it in half, thus adding on a second bedroom to my duplex. The wall that was built to split the master bedroom is the one I can hear everything through, what can I do to get/give some more privacy?

I tried wd-40 and that did not work. So is there a power tool they can loosen it. Do they sell power ratchets at hardware stores that can be put on power drills.
