I rent a room in a house full of college students, and sometimes the hall light wakes me up because it comes into my room through the cracks around the door.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to put around the door/doorframe to keep as much light out as possible?

There are a lot of things you can do to deter criminal activity around your house. First make your house visible to your neighbors and street, like cutting away brush near your house. Adding motion lights in the back or driveway is a great way to deter. You can also have a lamp put on a timer so there will always look like someone is there, when there isn't or you can leave your lights on in certain rooms just because. Make sure that your doors and windows are always locked securely, because burglars will only try for a bit before they give up. Have a dog helps a lot, either inside or outside the house. Getting a security system or having a phony security system sign is good to. These are all great things you can do to protect yourself and your property.

If the door is square and hung properly, it should keep the light out. If not, you can buy cheap inexpensive foam tack on, to fill the gap, the door might be a little tight after this.

foam weather strip works great the peal and stick side on the door stop across the head and strike side and against the jamb on the hinge side. May have to adjust the strike plate.
