I bought a furnace from Sears and they hired a subcontractor to install it. Now the subcontractor wants me to have the roof inspected so they can get their license back. Who is responsible for the costs?

I have been given two estimates to insulate the crawl space subfloor of my home. One specifies 5" of open-cell Icynene spray foam and the other specifies 1" of 2lb. closed-cell polyurethane spray foam. The R-value of the Icynene quote is 17, and the R-value of the 2lb. poly is 7. I can add another inch of the poly spray to increase the R-value to 14, close to the other R-value and about the same price, but the company providing the estimate says it's overkill since the rigid nature of the 2lb poly insulation repels water, moisture, mold, and critter infiltration. The Icynene is a softer material than the 2lb. poly, but the company providing that estimate calls their product a final insulation solution. I want a permanent solution to insulating my floors from moisture, air, mold, and critters. What is the best choice between these two? I will also put down a 6-mil vapor barrier and eventually get a professional grade de-humidifier.

I have a oil furnace and to me it seems like we run out of oil alot. Last time we bought oil it was 150$ CAN and now we had to order some more today.

My bf tells me I have to bleed the furnace in order for it to come on. So i turn this gold thingy and white stuff comes out so i put bottle under it, and when it gets into the bottle it turns like a light orangy brown color. Theres a smell of oil.. but its not really strong. So im thinking it could be oil and water mixed.

As im drainning this, I push this big red button, but today it seems that i had to drain alot...and in this bottle, there is white thicky wax looking stuff at the bottom and the orange brownish stuff on top.

This is my first house living with no parents, so i dont know if im doing this right or not. But running out of oil almost within 2 weeks seem a bit strange to you? And am I bleeding this furnace right? I can upload pics if anyone would like.

Thanks.

Looking at a fixer-upper and the previous owners (foreclosure) tore it up.

Is it possible to fix these large (0.5" and less) gaps on both sides of two doorways?

Ever since our hot water heater was replaced, our furnace is now making a very loud humming noise. It seems as if it is coming from inside the furance. It sounds like a cross between humming, and vibrate. It's oil heat, if that matters. We never had this problem until we had the hot water heater replaced. Any ideas?

I used my ohm meter and find the pairs and number at random, 6-3, 5-2, 1-4, then I found my last 3 leads that showed continuity and number at random 7-8-9...then I wired the motor for 208 3ph as follows, 4-5-6- togethers,
then 7-1 for line 1, then 8-2 to line 2, and 9-3 to line 3, the motor it is not grounded and the leads are not open, m' I missing something or the motor it's not good?

We had a powersurge at my house a few day's ago, stormy day. When I got home, my brother had removed the light switch in this room, claiming it was 'broken. I checked it, it's not even burned! Could it be damaged, or is just likely that he's a bit retarded?

I'm no plumbing expert by any stretch of the imagination but have a simple (i think?!) question about rad valves for any plumbers or heating experts out there. I am trying to replace my rad valves on some fairly large rads in a house I just bought. The valves themselves are quite old.

The feed pipes going into the valve are 15mm copper pipes but at the thread of the valve where it screws onto the rad, the size seems to be about 22mm or so. All the DIY shops I go to only seem to sell the rad valves at 15mm connections to the rad. I've been told this is the new British standard. Is it no longer possible to pick up valves with a 22mm (or thereabouts) thread to screw onto the rad?

The connector box in the ceiling has the white, black and ground wires and there are 3 wires from the light fixture - one bare that I believe is the ground and the other two are not colored and look identical. If I mix up the black and white in the connection will the light still work? How will I know if i mix the wiring?

Hi All,

I've just bough a new house and the bulb(s) in the main room constantly need replacing.

There are two ceiling lights with 3 bulbs off each. About once a week at least one of the bulbs will go.

I thought it may be a power surge or brown out problem, but wouldn't know where to start....

Any suggestions?

I can have nothing out on counters etc. but they are there, in the cupboards, cracks by the stove, electrical outlets, in bathroom, now up near ceiling over my bedroom door! I have told manager & they have had a pest control guy out t spray 1 x a month, no help. Its like I live on a ant hill. I know ants can be common but having to wash everything every few days is MAD! how can I manage the ANTS!!
