If you're asking if they work, eh...they're better than nothing, but you could do better.
If you rented an aerator, you'd be done with your lawn in short order. It will actually pull plugs of compacted soil out of your lawn. This will help air and water get deeper into your lawn. If you had spiked shoes on, you'll pop little holes in it, but to really aerate your lawn, you may need to walk all weekend and still won't do as well as an aerator does.
My brother-in-law went in on an aerator with some of his neighbors and since everyone ponied up, whenever he aerates his lawn, he drives the tractor over to their yards and does theirs too. You could go in with a neighbor to rent one of these machines. Home Depot carries them in their rental department.

You will only have aeration holes every few feet. You would be exhausted trying to aerate every square foot of the entire yard. For a more complete and thorough job rent a plug aerator every few years. Or buy a spike aerator, you can use them every month, it won't hurt anything. Some landscapers use ONLY spike aerators.
