I bought a furnace from Sears and they hired a subcontractor to install it. Now the subcontractor wants me to have the roof inspected so they can get their license back. Who is responsible for the costs?

I bought a furnace from SEARS. They hired a sub-contractor to install it in my attic. The subcontractor called me and said that I had to have my roof inspected so that he could get his license back. I have no idea what he means. AM I RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF THE INSPECTION?

It depends, read your contract, it might say that you are responsible for obtaining a permit from the city for the installation. If that is the case then you may have to pay for the inspection. Check with Sears as the subcontractor may be trying to stick it to you (it really has happened before).

The statement that Sears does things differently is certainly correct.

What does roof inspection have to do with furnace installation? Also what is a unlicensed subcontractor doing installing furnaces?
The only time there is an inspection of furnace installation is when you have a loan to build a house and the bank or their representative will inspect furnace installation before final payment is made to heating contractor. Sounds very fishy to me but then you are dealing with sears. They tend to do things VERY differently than other businesses. You shouldn't have to pay for anything but the installation of the furnace and air conditioner unless you signed a contract that states otherwise. Good luck!

For the furnace, since Sears provided the contractor for your install, didn't they give you some kind of warranty on it? I'd guess too that Sears only uses licensed contractors(?).

The roof?
I'm not sure what a roof inspection has got to do with a furnace?

I'd call Sears customer service, & find out what they say.
And to let them know about WHAT the subcontractor wants you to do. They'd probably like the customer feedback from you.
;~))

That is an unusual situation....why would a subcontractor's license be affected by installing a furnace in your house. Bottom line, it is his license and his responsibility to maintain and keep up to date. I'm assuming, of course, he was licensed to do the installation in the first place. Don't see that any burden of remedy falls on your shoulders from the little that you have said here.
