Ever since our hot water heater was replaced, our furnace is now making a very loud humming noise. It seems as if it is coming from inside the furance. It sounds like a cross between humming, and vibrate. It's oil heat, if that matters. We never had this problem until we had the hot water heater replaced. Any ideas?

The furnace started making the noise after the hot water heater was replaced, which may not have anything to do with it, since the hot water heater is not located anywhere new the furnace. The noise does not start right away. It starts a couple minutes after the heater is turned on. It appears to be coming from inside the furnace somewhere.

Oil burners have a pump that pumps the oil & a blower that blows the heated air.

The best way to find out if ether of these is a problem is to listen by the furnace as it starts up. If the noise starts right away then it could be the pump on the burner. Check & see if you can see a little cap or a hole that you can put some oil in.
if that don't help, it may well be wore out.

If it fires up & there is no noise wait until the air heats up a little & the blower will kick in.

If you hear the noise it could be the belt or the bearings on the blower.

If it is squealing it would more likely a bearing.

Watch it as it runs, you may be able to tell witch it is.

You can put belt dressing on the belt & some on the shaft where the pulley is. It may be to late to really help but if you notice that it makes it a little quieter you will have a better idea of what is wrong

You might have some air trapped in the system. See if there is a vet for air, and open it. Mine looks like a miniature petcock. If this isn't it, and no one else comes up with an idea that works, call your service man.
