Whoever brought Menard's (great lakes region retailer)into their answer shame on you. When you can buy a gallon of bbq sauce with your load of lumber you are not in a hardware store. I would say that HD is better usually their people actually know what they are talking about, and they want to help (in my area at least). True story went to HD and Lowes for kitchen remodel, from what I could see Lowes was going to be around $100 cheaper on the cabinets. So when I went back into pay they couldn't make time for me, they were all busy, understandable. So I went and got a manager and said I just want to pay for my kitchen, so he pulled it up and saw that I still haven't picked out hardware. So we go and pick out hardware and then I want to pay for it. He says I can't make this into pay mode(or whatever they call it) for you it will take credit away from Johnnie. So I went to Home Depot had no problem they were just as busy and greeted me right away and asked that I look around for about 15 minutes and they would be done with their customer, and be right with me. Truly it was about 30 minutes, but I didn't mind they were nice and helpful and got me to pay mode in about 15 minutes and now they have my complete kitchen remodel and my business forever.

We were a Home Depot area until Lowes opened a store just as close to here. Having been in both I find that it usually doesn't make much of a difference. If I want a commodity item (wood, screws, paint) then Home Depot is adequate. If I am looking for a classier item (like a better lamp than the standard one at HD) then I go to Home Depot's EXPO store which carries the next step better than HD does but for which Lowes has no equivalent.
If I want to find something on sale I go to Lowes. They always have clearance tables (HD never does) so if you need something they happen to have on clearance they are unbeatable.
I went to one of their classes to learn how to put in a storm door. They opened up a box with a $200 door and showed the class how to prep it for installation. After the class I asked the instructor what happens to that door now that they have opened its box. He said "Come back tomorrow and it will be on clearance for $30 because its box is open."

It seems like since Lowe's has been coming out with more stores that Home Depot has been going downhill. You can never seem to find anyone to help you in a Home Depot. The prices where I am at are the exact same at Home Depot and Lowes. The Lowe's here are much more clean and organized and tons of people to help out. So, definitely, Lowe's.

Here's a slightly differnt answer for you.
I live in Canada. We have Home Depot, but we don't have Lowes. YET!
Late last year we heard that Lowes will be locating in Canada.
I think sometime in 2008-09.
Presently we have a couple of alternatives to Home Depot, but I am looking forward to the addition of Lowes here.
I think it will be great to have another alternative to shop. I do a lot of home improvement projects.
Cheers!

oh, both have their strong points and weak points. the help in home depot is more knowledgeable and will show you where anything is in any department, usually. Lowes people are told to stick to their department only. so finding help when you need it is a real pain. I used to work at lowes i know both sides of that coin. My choice? Home depot. yes, lowes will take back any dam thing, even things they didn't sell, and are in terrible condition. when i worked there they took back wall paneling that had paid lines on the ends and nail holes in it, and it was a brand and variety we did not even sell. i think that is stupid, but they will do it if you holler enough.

Gee, I've been looking for a good place to say what I think of Home Depot and their terrible way of managing a store. At least here, there aren't enough employees to help you. All the aisles are empty. If you happen to find one to help you, that person usually does not know how to help you and most often as a bad attitude to go along with lack of professionalism. The Home Depots have very little in stock but the further north I go the more products are available. There is a new Lowes 25 miles from my house. It is clean, well stocked and the prices are extremely high. What a choice!

I had carpet put in by a lowes contractor, i have been satisfied with the price and quality...but the stores serve slightly different purposes....i always like to say, for the toilet go to home depot, for the toilet seat go to lowes, seems to sum it up pretty well.
HD has more of the hardcore stuff, lowes is a nicer shopping experience, and they played nicer music...i find returning stuff to home depot easier

With no offense to anyone, it's strictly a matter of personal preference. Admittedly much of that is based on personal experience, but it's like comparing Vanilla Ice Cream to Chocolate.
I find HD to have more people available to offer service. I also find Lowes to be less crowded usually. Does that mean one is "Better" than the other? Better is relative.
I have noticed something, which is typical of this country with regard to same type retailers. Usually where one finds an HD, they won't be too far from a Lowes. I also suggest it seems foolish to regard a store name when comparing prices of any particular item. If HD happens to be more convenient, but charges $1.00 more for a gallon of paint, I'll probably pay the dollar to the store, rather than a gas station.
With regard to product, they are pretty equal in comparison. I've been in the trades a long time, KNOW what I want when I shop, and make it a habit to purchase items I won't need to return.
I also suggest, "why not shop both?" Share the wealth and expand your experiences as they relate to comparing, and/or settling in on one or the other.
I have an analogy. Assume they are both a Sports team. Assume then that they are in competition. It's usually a habit of anyone going to an "Event" to root for one team over another. That doesn't strictly define one as "better" than the other, overall.

Hands downfor me it's Lowe's. It's cleaner, the people are more knowledgable. They do further testing on their employees area of expertise than Home Depot. Cosmetic things go to Lowe's for lighting, etc...
Home Depot is a bit cheaper, but often the quality of brands etc Lowe's is your place. Building supplies contractor wise, wood etc, Home Depot is better. Homeowners who need advice, etc Lowe's. Contractor materials go to Home Depot.
I also prefer Lowe's because in 1989, a friend of my husbands was killed at the Home Depot in California when a pallet from up above crushed him. He was just one year out of high school working there while taking college classes. Home Depot settled with his parents but it was a horrible loss. He is someone I would have like my children to know. He was with my husband and I double dating on our first date.
