my neighbors have dug a large hole that is mostly in their property, but comes into ours a bit. they have also dug another large hole in the yard behind us...i have called the city department and they should respond quickly, but i just noticed something...around the hole, in a large radius, is a patch of white...stuff...i hit it with my knife and its pretty hard and solid...solid enough to cut a piece out of it. i then noticed that there was a snake, dead, lodged in the material sticking half out, along with an assortment of large bugs... i can smell sewage strongly, and they are supposedly only trying to connect to the city sewer, but im not worried about that...do you have any ideas what the white stuff is, and what i should do about it?

I have an issue with my landlord, she wants me to pay for something that isnt my fault. The washer and dryer hookups were faulty when i moved in, and i didnt know that. So the water leaked all in the wall to my kitchen, which led to a 3x3 ft hole being cut into my wall behind my fridge. And now she wants me to pay for the guy that came out to cut the hole in the wall, because I thought it was my fridge leaking (all the water was under the fridge). So you can see how I came to that conclusion. But I dont think that I should have to pay, it was faulty hook ups that made the water leak not my washer. Does anybody know where I stand legally? Do I have to pay? resources please, thanx.

I recently bought a condo built in 1951. It has a brand new wall heater but the pilot will not stay lit. I think this is because of low pressure caused by a blockage in the gas line. How can the blockage be cleared? Are the pipes to old to fix? I believe replacing the pipes would be very costly because i would need to run new ones ontop of the roof and down through the walls. Any idea how much that would cost? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Is anyone aware of any products that I could attach to the end of steel fish tape (for pulling cable / wire through walls) so that I could determine the location of the tip of the tape through a wall?

Whenever i shut the faucet in the kitchen, it sounds like the water pipes are banging against a wall. I tried 'bleeding' out the water pipes to remove air, and this helped for a few hours but the noises came back.

I found large growth of fungus in the back of my closet. I know that a leak on my porch is the problem. The builder is addressing that issue ( again ) today. I found the growth last night and have not tried to start cleaning it. I have the builder VP coming out to look at it himself. I've asked them to have a mold specialist come out too. My question now is...What about all our clothes and shoes. Should they be responsible for cleaning them? and how should I got about the cleaning job, I'd hate to spread more around. I have a heat duct in the closet, so I'd guess that mold has gotten into the air system in the house. We are not sick. (thankful) But I don't want to start carrying all these clothes around washing them by my machine and making the problem worse. Should we throw out the carpet? What about the leather shoes thats white dust was on? Builder said that it would be a good idea to stay out of the closet, What would one of you do next? Thanks

We are considering central air and heat for our old house. I know very little about heating and cooling. The two current estimates are for a heat pump with back up gas furnace. The heat pump provides heat and air conditioning, with the gas furnace kicking in when it gets under 30 degrees (we live in Missouri). I do prefer gas heat, as it is a warmer heat, but my sister told me some people are not satisfied with their heat pump, not keeping the house truly warm. The heat pump does cost more to install.

My beloved has completely destroyed the surface of the porcelain in the U-bend of one of our toilets. He used one of those 'windy, windy' things to unblock the pipe and threw a bit of a strop when it didn't work first time! Where he pressed down on the U-bend, there are a mass of nasty black scratches which look absolutely dreadful. The fact that it's the guest bathroom makes it worse as it looks as though I haven't cleaned it in months. Is there anything I can do (I'm not letting him near it!) to fix it?
