My beloved has completely destroyed the surface of the porcelain in the U-bend of one of our toilets. He used one of those 'windy, windy' things to unblock the pipe and threw a bit of a strop when it didn't work first time! Where he pressed down on the U-bend, there are a mass of nasty black scratches which look absolutely dreadful. The fact that it's the guest bathroom makes it worse as it looks as though I haven't cleaned it in months. Is there anything I can do (I'm not letting him near it!) to fix it?

Porcelain or any type of ceramic has what is called a glaze to it. That glaze is basically a very thin film of glass. That's not something that you can really repair. If you try polishing the scratches out all you will do is make the glaze thinner or end up polishing completely through the glaze.

If you can clean the scratches and remove the dirt from them then get the toilet dry, you might be able to apply a clear enamel to the scratches then lightly polish it smooth. However, I don't know if there are any products out there to do that. There may be. Go to your local hardware store and ask.

Most likely your beloved may have completely ruined your toilet and you probably just might have to get a new one installed.

The problem is if the glaze is gone that bacteria will tend to grow there like crazy and turn it black fast. If you can actually somehow reseal it (super glue, epoxy or some other means) then it might on a remote chance be able to be saved.

Put in a new toilet or get some porcelain repair paint at your local hardware store.

My hubby a plumber and his best advice is to buy a 'pot rubber' (looks like a pencil eraser but has grit in which doesn't damage pot). This should take the black marks off the top coat of glaze.
These are quite hard to find as they are usually trade only. If you are in UK I could send you in Post (only small).

Jif liquid. Don't rub too hard though, the glaze is quite thin
