my neighbors have dug a large hole that is mostly in their property, but comes into ours a bit. they have also dug another large hole in the yard behind us...i have called the city department and they should respond quickly, but i just noticed something...around the hole, in a large radius, is a patch of white...stuff...i hit it with my knife and its pretty hard and solid...solid enough to cut a piece out of it. i then noticed that there was a snake, dead, lodged in the material sticking half out, along with an assortment of large bugs... i can smell sewage strongly, and they are supposedly only trying to connect to the city sewer, but im not worried about that...do you have any ideas what the white stuff is, and what i should do about it?

Sounds like the house is old and had an old septic tank in the yard, which probably crumbled, leaked and fell in, which attracted a lot of critters. Also, in the old days, the septic tanks were usually shared by more than one household and sometimes placed in the ground between property lines. The white stuff is probably the lid of the old tank or toilet paper that hardened.

Do you know if you're hooked up the the city sewer, now would be a good time to get hooked up as they're doing the neighbor.

Are you sure they are not burying dead bodies in lime? Sounds pretty suspicious to me. The City would not allow a person to connect to the sewer without the connection being made by a licensed plumber.

Sounds like they are putting in a french drain. Hopefully NOT for their sewage.
That would be illegal. Are their drainage problems in your neighborhood ?

omg... that's crazy... i would let the city handle it.. but that seems really suspicious.. i would tell the neighbor how i felt.. especially with bugs, and snakes.. that is hazardous.. and will just attract bugs closer to your house...
