In my area, our electric utility has a website calculator that I used to determine the answer to that very question. We, however, have a gas heater with an electric motor and fan to heat the whole house. Check to see whether your electric company also has such a calculator. To use ours, you have to know the BTU's of your central heater, the square footage of your home and the space you wish to heat as a percentage and the temperature you wish to maintain. It is helpful, but not necessary to know the watts of the space heater, as well.

For us, it is cheaper to use 2 electric space heaters to heat our family room and office than it is to run the whole house heater even if I close off the registers to the other rooms. Hence, I got two Holmes energy efficient space heaters with temperature adjustments and a variable speed fan which can oscillate or not depending on the setting. According to the website calculator, the space heaters use about the same electricity as a blow dryer which is about 5 cents an hour whereas the whole house heater costs about 50 cents an hour to operate.

Hope this helps.

I have a all electric home and dont like to run the central heater when its only 50 degrees at night then
70 degrees in the evening. So is it cheaper to use space heaters until the winter stays cold?

It's probably cheaper to use a space heater, but it may not be worth it. Space heaters are the cause of many house fires.

Err, depends on what type of "heater" you refer to.

another space heater? A fan heater? central heating? water heating?

Sorry, until we have a meaningful question, it s not possible to give you a meaningful answer.
