I have reiceved a castiron woodburning stove and the outside has a layer of crap. what is the best way to clean that off and prepare it for painting?

you can use scrubbing bubbles just spray on and leave for 15-20 minutes and it will bubble up all the nasty stuff on the stove and then take a scrub brush and brush the stove good all over and take your water hose and rinse it off. scrubbing bubbles is good for a lot of cleaning stuff.i had an air conditioner tech tell me they use it to clean the grills on air conditioners !

Lowes, Home Depot,a stove store all should have some product to clean up and restore the looks of a wood burning stove. There was an old product called stove black which was applied on a rag and then rubbed into all surfaces of the stove. Did that job as one of my chores some 75 years ago.

A wire brush will work, or if you have access to a sand or shot blaster. What ever you do don't spray with WD-40 or any oily products, where as the paint will not stick as well or not at all.
