We have an old porch which really should be replaced....but in the meantime, what's the best type of paint for the floor and steps? I have to repaint it every year, and I'm really getting tired of it. It just flakes and peels like crazy. I've used Latex paint, which is useless. Is it worthwhile to use a primer like Kilz, and/or is an oil-based paint really any better? Or is there something else I can do to extend the life of the paint a little?

And what about adding texture to make it non-slip? Should I add texture to the paint, or toss some sand on it before it dries? And hey, will that help prevent peeling too?

My Mum has had the ball valve replaced in the cold water tank in her loft with the same type of fitting that came out (like for like), but she has since been told that it should have been replaced with a
"Part 2" ball valve and not a "part 1" in case of "contamination". I have never heard of Pt1 or Pt2 ball valves. Are there such things ? And if so what's the difference ?

Just had survey back and it says it's "probably" due to poor workmanship and we may wish to get it levelled at some point! Wow great help. Hubby noticed the floor sloping when we viewed the house so we specifically asked the surveyor to look at this as a matter of concern - you can see his reply was not exactly informative - just what my husband already knew! Hubby is a carpenter and says it's a big worry if the lounge ceiling below needs lifting up. Are we letting ourselves in for a lot of work even if we get the vendors to drop the purchase price do we really want this upheaval in a new house?? I thought we were all sorted and moving towards a moving date!!!

what would someone charge to paint the walls and the ceilings for 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, very small dinning area, kitchen and a living room with cathedral ceilings. And the owner supplies the paint and all the materials.

I know it takes less energy to set the thermostat on Fan Only. That's kind of a no brainer. Is there any objective evidence that running the fan actually helps keep the house cooler? With no moisture coming out of the air, I find it gets uncomfortable, but I've got a roommate that thinks it helps. Thanks.

I was burnishing some floors with a burnisher that has a fairly new 14 hp onan engine, propane with electric start. When I shut it off for a few minutes and started it back up, it backfired. Does anyone have a clue as to why it would do this?
