We had a similar problem when we first moved into our house, it is not your fault and is not due to poor cleanliness.
We bought some stuff called Nippon leave it out of the way somewhere that kids and animals can't get to, the ants find it and take it back to the nest, and it eliminates the problem. Only issue is that it does take about 2 weeks to work properly.

Your basic bug spray can get rid of those little pesks in the house, but they've got to be coming from somewhere. So a suggestion is to trace their route (easy enough to do, just follow the line of ants marching along) and find their "home". And if it's someplace outside, there are numerous ant killers on the market you can buy at Walmart or a local grocery store to get rid of them. But the best is any fire-ant killer, preferably one that is water activated. Just sprinkle it on, soak it with water, and within 24 hours your anthill will be dead, including the queen. Hope this helps! :)

I had tiny ants not big carpenter type ants. I sealed the bottom of the siding with "great stuff". The aerosol can with liquid styrofoam which hardens to a messy yellow, drippy mess. So if you do it you should paint it after its hardened. This blocked the path of the ants from the soil and without chemicals stopped them from entering my house.

put ant powder around the doorways and any low windows. leave shoes at the door in case there are ants on them.
Make sure there is no food or crumbs left around anywhere for them to eat, like make sure plates are cleared quickly

Ive tried all the commercial remedies, none worked, so used a variety of home-made concoctions, the best I found was madras curry powder sprinkled around where they entered the house. I only used a bit, theyve never been back since.

Get some ant powder, and sprinkle it along their main routes, they'll take it back to the queen, who'll die, and then all the ants will eventually leave or die. I have also been known to hoover them up!
