I never lived with needing a septic tank....what is the care

Well, for starters, don't put grease down any drain and don't use the toilet for a garbage disposal. There are companies that service and maintain septic systems. The most important thing is to have the tank pumped about every 2 years. The pumping basically removes any build up of goo in the bottom of the tank. The water works its way through the tank and out the drain field. If you are new to this house with a septic tank, I'd call a septic company and have the tank pumped. Basically, it should be a "not to worry," if you have a good system and you keep the tank pumped periodically. The septic maintenance company can advise you. Good luck. (I forgot about not flushing the personal hygiene, etc., stuff.)

About once a month, you need to pour a box of Rid-X in your toilet. (Follow the instructions on the box.) Rid-X "eats up" the goobers down in your septic tank and helps keep it cleaner.

Also, as a general rule, don't ever put paper of any kind (not even toilet paper) in the toilet -- instead throw it in your bathroom trash-can.

The main rule to follow is that you want to minimize and hopefully postpone forever the dastardly job of having to have your septic tank cleaned-out -- so, by definition, the less paper you throw in it the longer it will take to get full. (I've never had one get full ... but my friends here in the country tell me that the first sign is that stinky poop-and-pee start rising to the top of the ground over your septic tank. Just the thought of that makes it worthwhile to me to avoid throwing paper in the toilet. Also, when the septic tank people come out to empty your septic tank, they have to tear-up your yard in order to access the septic tank ... another reason to avoid having to have your septic tank emptied. (I don't make a big deal of it when I have "company" -- but I personally never put paper in the toilet.)

There are all kinds of stuff that you can use for them. One is called Rid ex ( Not sure of the spelling) and its sold at the local hardware stores. You can get a keg of yeast at the grocery store and flush that down there once a month as well.
It will break down alot of the solids in the tank.
Then you have to have them cleaned by a professional company once every year or two. Depending on how many people are living in the house.

You should have it professionally inspected at least every three years. It depends on how many people are using it, and how big it is. Use a foaming root killer once a year. Don't flush anything besides waste and toilet paper (no tampons or condoms or anything like that). Also, try this link: http://alsnetbiz.com/homeimprovement/septic.html

If its yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down. Easy as that. And not any feminine hygiene products and only a little bit of Toilet Paper.
