What is the best and easiest way to replace/repair bathtub trip-lever drain?

Usually it a is relatively easy job. Usualy it is...:)

Unscrew the mounting bolts and pull the lever out.
Replacing a new one will require a little fussing with adjusting the length to adjust the 'trip', but if you got that far the rest is a piece of cake.
