if im thinking about this correctally... if the engine is running too rich it can cause a build up as you shut it off... if it is injected into the engine and not ignited... but im not 100% sure..... hope it helps

RE:
What makes a small engine backfire?
I was burnishing some floors with a burnisher that has a fairly new 14 hp onan engine, propane with electric start. When I shut it off for a few minutes and started it back up, it backfired. Does anyone have a clue as to why it would do this?

Take it back. The gas is igniting outside the combustion chamber. Not only is it off but this will damage the engine long term

Fuel in the exhaust manifold, poss due to a leak;
Timing off.
I'ld get it checked. Especially if it happens again.

If the heads were removed, distributer not set in the cam gear properly, Timing chain off a tooth. Else the firing order wrong (wire crossed). or distributer mis adjusted. Broken rotor button. valves to tight. (Adjusted before they had proper oil pressure).

exhaust valve not opening consistantly(causes engine to run rough too), intake valve not closing consistantly, faulty carbeurator discharge, build-up of deposits on face of piston(throws off timing)
