I will be needing plenty of excellent soil for raised vegetable beds in the spring and I'd like to compost now through the winter to produce as much possible to fill the beds prior to planting. What is your experience and your suggestion? Which method? Much Thanks!!

Hi all,

I'm having a hosta problem. Soon after I got my hosta, I noticed small black bugs which I thought to be ants in the plantbox and sometimes on the hosta plant I have. I ignored them for awhile, and then discovered one morning their was a spherical, fuzzy, white/orange ball (about the size of a large marble?) which had completely encircled two of the hosta leaf stems (the leaf stem were dying). We cut off both leaves with the fuzzy ball, thinking maybe it was some type of fungus. Ever since then, I've noticed that in addition to my little black "ants" (Which I'm thinking may not be ants?) there are these little white fuzzy insects which like to hang out at the base of the hosta in between the leaf stems and on the underside of the leaves. I've been scraping them off whenver I see them, but my hosta is still suffering somewhat. What are these things??

PS--I live in a 2nd floor apartment, so my hosta is not exposed to anything on ground level, unless it came with the hosta...

when i got it,it was a stick with some roots so i planted it in a large pot and its in my garden...
the picture of it in my catalogue shows 3 balls of coloured flowers up the stem but im unsure how to look after it...
mine seems to have grown massive shoots with flowers all along them, its quite wild looking...
im unsure of how to get it looking neat and tidy with round balls of flowers in bloom!
maybe im supposed to prune as they grow to keep them short and this could make it bush out more?
if anyone knows how i can look after my hibiscus i would love the advise!
i live on a coastal river that can be lovely and sunny or on the other hand, very windy at times..
my front garden is riverfront entrance with sun most the day although i have a shadier area there...and my back garden gets sun later in the day and until then can be blowy at times...
where would be the best place to put it and should i keep it in a pot or plant?
also i have wisteria trees in pots and want to plant them

My neighbor just build a large garage in the back corner of his lot. When I bought my house, the view out of my kitchen and livingroom windows were of a treeline. Now, because of the way my house is positioned on my lot, I stare directly into the wall of his garage. What plants can I put on my property line that will effectively screen my view of my neighbor's garage and not take over my or his lawn?
