Not sure if you are referring to termite hills in Muncy, Indiana or elseswhere... I have pictures of termite hills that are about 5' tall or perhaps 6' in Africa. They are sort of cone shaped. larger at the bottom and more pointed on top. It is a mud type material naturally.. from the earth below but termites add a saliva type stuff when they make their hill and the hills are as hard as cement when they are dry...The entrance to the hill is at the bottom but have tunnels, etc inside and they keep building by adding primarily to the top of the cone and it keeps getting taller

Termite hills look like hills but thin. And termity-ish. Chunky.

See the other answers. My question is if you are seeing mounds in your yard, and you are in the US, you are probably not seeing termites. They don't develop hills here and are subterranean except when they make dirt tubes up your walls into your house.
