I was told you can use a black trash can to absorb heat during the day and releaseit at night. I live in the central Arkansas area were it is cold only about three months out of the year.

I have a small garden this year and planted pole beans, peppers, cucumbers, roma tomatoes, pumpkin and egg plant.

The cucumbers, tomatoes & pole beans are growing, the pumpkins are in bloom too, but the two eggplants (bought already grown from Lowes) didn't make it. The peppers, that were sprouts when I planted them, didn't make it either.

Any idea what will grow best in South West Virginia?

I was wondering what I might have done wrong with my eggplants.

Also, does anyone know if watermelon will grow well here.

I've enjoyed fresh cucumbers from my garden this year, but was wondering if a trellis would be best to grow them on next year. Right now I'm using just simple bamboo poles, but they seem to need something larger.

Thanks.

I was thinking about planting pole beans again in my garden next year, but was wondering what are the best ways to get them to vine. I didn't use string this year, as I've seen a lot of people do, but use bamboo poles. What are other ways to grow them? Would a trellis do better?

Thanks.

I have a pumpkin plant in my garden that is now getting yellow leaves and a few dry spots. It's rained quite a bit and I'm wondering if that's a sign of too much rain? Does anyone know?

I also noticed that one of the leaves were broke on the stem, but thankfully not at the vine. I have been told that if a pumpkin plant stem is cut that the plant will "bleed" to death. Does anyone know if this is so?

Hello all,

I've recently bought my first house and inherited a wooden deck & surround railings. The deck's weathered (gone a bit green), and the railings are looking a bit flaky. I started to brush the deck hard with a stiff bristle brush, to remove the green... but I'm concerned that I may have stripped any protection on the wood.

My question is, what DIY product should I look for, to protect and improve the appearance of both the deck and railings?

Thanks

I'm after a piece of artificial grass of 4m x 4.5 m as a children's play area, to be layed on a bed of gravel and sand. Can anyone suggest the best option to use and where to buy?

Thanks

We have a mulberry tree that keeps coming back after i cut it down. I have heard such things as a copper nail will permanently solve the problem. Your ideas will be appreciated. Thanks.

I just bought top soil (not potting soil) to put in a raised bed I just had built. Besides compost, what else should I start putting in the soil, so it is ready for the next growing season?

because the back of my yard looks dead with nothing in it. The previous owners put a veggetable garden in it but I think they decided it was too much work. It's a bit dry back there and very shadey from all the trees covering the light.

please help me find something to make my backyard a bit more colorful and cheerful to look at!

The vines seem like they have eyes and are "exploring". They are hooking on to anything and everything that is around it. I can't figure out how it knew to move a very long vine from one side of the fence to the other side where the trellis is...in a day!

We are over run with nut grass and other weeds in every one of our new mulch beds which are between 8" to 12" deep. The roots grow horizontally and extremely difficult to get all of them.

We've tried edging of varying heights, all kinds of chemicals, different mulches and rocks, weed-stop mesh material, and even completely removed the sod underneath on a new bed. Funny thing was a combination of the last two ended up with weeds & nut grass the fastest.

Attention professional landscapers and Agriculture majors: please, please, please let us know if a silver bullet exists to eliminate (or make our chore a lot more manageable) this problem. If we don't find a solution soon, we may just abandon the beds entirely and let the grass "win"!
