because the back of my yard looks dead with nothing in it. The previous owners put a veggetable garden in it but I think they decided it was too much work. It's a bit dry back there and very shadey from all the trees covering the light.
please help me find something to make my backyard a bit more colorful and cheerful to look at!

Lily of the Valley does extremely well in shade. However, it is poisonous to cats, dogs and humans if eaten. So if you have any animals that will eat it or young kids that will eat it, then it isnt the plant for you.
Flax...the packaging says sun, but mine are in shade and do wonderfully every year.
Carnations...again, packaging says sun, but they are in shade and do awesome.
Johnny Jump Ups/Violas...very invasive, so if you want a yard full of purple and yellow flowers, these are for you.
Irises will work also...they love both sun and shade and are very forgiving plants.

Oh, shade is wonderful! You can do so much with flowers, but the best part of shade (to me) is the lush long-lasting colorful foliage- bold, variegated hostas, the lacework of ferns, the dramatic arches of Solomon's Seal and Toad Lilies (both of which flower, the first in the spring, and the second, exotic spotted blooms in the fall). For blooms- spring bulbs under deciduous trees, they'll be done before the trees leaf out completely. Hellebores are wonderful winter-blooming shade accents. Also, the woodland wildflowers- Trillium, Dicentra (bleeding heart), wood anenome, etc. And, the wonderful shrubs- statuesque rhododendron and mountain laurel (Kalmia), extravagant azaleas, and elegant Pieris japonica, all of which bloom their heads off in part shade.
Count yourself lucky to have wonderful big trees!

Hydrangeas would be a great shrub for that area. They like shady areas and produce flowers spring through fall. There are also many colors to choose from. And don't forget about spring flowers. Daffodils would also do well in this area. Tulips also can tolerate part shade. Hardy Geraniums are another shrub that provide lots of color spring through early fall. Many varieties of impatiens (singles and doubles) and begonias (ditto) would give you the color you're looking for in the shade. Neither species is terribly picky as long as they get some water. You might also consider lobelia for a fantastic blue (other colors available), violas and violets, forget-me-not (Mysotis) and, for foliar color, coleus.
Sometimes shade lovers are in short supply in retail outlets, but all of these should be available.

I have had alot of luck with bleeding hearts. The fern leaf variety and the Zestfull variety bloom from ;late spring into fall. They are very happy underneath a very heavy canopy of trees. Try hostas which will bloom in July (most of them are purple blooms).

I would go with impatiens. They come in various colors and love the shade. You could also plant hostas they bloom in the middle of the summer and come in various colors and patterns.

Primrose...! All the way..! They are the best "Tough,colorfull,fragrant,reproducing,drought resistant,shade loving plant" thats one of my personal favorites. The sort of plant that benefits from all poor conditions and makes more so you only have to buy it once! The yellow colored primrose is my favorite it smell is so sweet. Reminds me of Freesia's. The white is sort of Spicey to me.

just grab wildflower seeds and toss them all around. They'll re-seed year after year and you won't have to worry about it. Toss down the hose twice a week and you're good!
We did it at my moms house and she had black eyed susans, daisies and such...they were gorgoeous!
