I've had very good luck spraying Round-Up on poison ivy. Spray the leaves well and it will take a few days, but it does work.

First let me say "good luck". It is an uphill battle. However, it can be won. The best time to kill poision ivy is in the winter when the other weeds have died down and it is fairly easy to spot the vine. However, keep in mind that even if the poision ivy looks dead it can still cause irritation. This is another reason it's better in the winter. You will want to bundle yourself up and cover all areas of skin. If it is possible get a full cloth jump suit from the local hospital as you will want to throw away (not burn) your clothes after you've treated the ivy. It is also important to wear goggles and a mask as airborne ivy can get in your lungs and eyes.

Once you are completly covered attack the ivy at the root. Either spray ivy killing solution on the root or cut the ivy at the root (the latter is the better) If you choose to spray the ivy, return in a couple of days and pull the dead vines (remember that even though they are dead they can still cause problems, cover up for this as well) and place them in a plastic garbage bag. DO NOT BURN THE VINES! This will cause the most problems.

Again, it can be done but you have to make sure to get the plant at the root and do it all at once.

Good luck!

Wear protective clothing
Spray visible vines and plants with Round-up, Spectricide, or Orthro Brush B gone. I had to mix the Spectricide and the Ortho with water and diesel fuel to get rid of a patch in the yard.

during the winter or dormant season, cut and pull the vines and as much of the root system up and transport to your local landfill.

Do not burn as the oil that causing the problems will vaporize and infect anyone within breathing distance of the fumes.

If you get infected, the best way to get rid is go to doctor, get the steroid shot and take the pills.

whatever you do just dont burn it. my dad developed a rash from burning poison ivy. he later learned the oil in poison ivy can travel in the smoke. when you are done cutting it down and pulling it up, take all the clothes you were wearing and throw them away.

Debbie, you can spend alot of money and get vegetation killer at your hardware store ...or try a home recipie that just may work and for a very low price , white vinegar diluted with 1 part water to three parts vinegar. I haven't had poison ivy, but it has taken care of alot of my weeds.

You know what works great? Oven cleaner. Spray oven cleaner on it and the vines wither and die. Then put on gloves after a couple of days and pull up the dead stuff by the roots.
