Don't people realize that a house in a neighborhood can be worth only so much? I mean if you put 50,000 in home improvements (when the stuff you are replacing is fine and not outdated) just because you want a new kitchen, living room (give me a break) will go up if the houses in that neighborhood only command a certain price? Why do people put so much money into their homes even though they know that won't get the money back in resale since houses in a neighborhood can command in price to a certain extent and thats it?

The arch was put in to open out the living room and dining room but i hate it and would like 2 seperate rooms, but i'd like it to have doors on so it can be opened out when we have parties etc, what would be the best way to go about this? preferably without using a builder!

My floors and trim are cherry and the staircase just doesn't match. How much of the staircase should be painted? If painting wouldn't look right it really needs to be stained darker. Any suggestions?

me and my partner are in the process of buying our first house, we made are offer back in september 06,since then there as been problem after problem, the house needs a fire wall in the loft,a extra skin of brick work in the inside wall in the kitchen, also in the bathroom.repairs to the roof.(these are only small) there as been a door put in where a window used to be,which we need to find out if there as been planning for this, also what is holding the wall above the door up. after finding out all this we decided to pull out, but yesterday i had a phone call from the estate agents saying that the vendor would be willing to pay for all these repairs, me and my partner really do love the house, does anyone know when the jobs are done if it is up to the vendor to put it back to its original state, eg: re plaster walls, replace anything that is damaged during the work been done, carpets etc thanks in advance

I heard about colors and metals and such that go at various poles using a compass in each room but is there a diagram I need to follow specifically for the # 2? Thanks for any good help.

I am looking to buy curtains for my living room. Most of my furniture is of a light color - beige or light wood. Our floors are also light wood. We have no rug. Our walls are light yellow. And we have a moderate sized light wood-framed poster that is mainly of a blue-ish color. I would like to create a warmer, more homey feeling to the room. What are you suggestions for the color? I'm thinking maybe a dark green or a dark red?? Help from those interior designers out there??

the fireplace is done in terra cotta tiles (including the hearth). there is a copper door over the fireplace opening. copper ceiling tiles, and dark wood panelling that goes about 2 1/2 feet up the wall from the floor. the floor is medium/dark hardwood. right now the walls are kind of a putty color (like the color of an old band aid) its real ugly--the previous owners did it. this color would also have to extend into the dining room because the two rooms are seperated only by an arch. also what color do you think the window treatment should be? the only furniture i have is a reddish-brown leather love seat and a big rattan wing-back armchair. i have 2 mission-style table lamps with amber glass shades. the hanging light fixture in the dining room is similar. whats some ideas for color and maybe furniture?

My master bathroom is very bland. It doesn't have that type of bathroom that says "Now this is a bathroom!!" As you come into the bathroom, I have my two facebowls with a vanity mirror on the right side with my comode on the side of my face bowls. On the opposite or in front my face bowls is a white wall and in front my comode is the bathtub. Now if I can get any tips on how to make my bathroom look more romantic or even sexier and where I could get the things I need at a reasonable price, it would help me alot.

Ya, I know, it sounds like a really stupid question. But the problem is that my parents won't let me tape posters to the wall, cuz they say that the paint will get ruined or something like that. That's why I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me how put posters up without actually using any tape. Thanks in advance!

Me and my husband recently found out we are having a girl, due June 1st. He is a major Chicago Cubs fan, and had planned on doing the nursery if we had a boy. I would like to surprise him and still do the team, but for a girl. The only thing I have been able to find is a pink Cubs mobile. Does anyone know where to find other girl Cubbie nursery items? Or, if anyone knows where I can find some fabric, I will just make the rest? Thanks

My daughter is 5 and loves tinkerbell. Decided to do her room under that theme, however most of the colors are fairly dark.(purple, pink, green, etc) Will that make her room look smaller?
