Cleaning & Laundry - July 2007

[Selected]: All categories Home & Garden Cleaning & Laundry

I have 4 kids and a husband and the laundry at my house is horrendous. My biggest problem is with the socks. I have 2 baskets full of unmatched socks. I could sit down and match them up but it would take forever and in a week they'd be full again. We've tried to do the different toe color etc, but nothing works. How do you keep your socks in order? How do I keep my laundry in order? Any helpful ideas that you use would be great! Thanks!

I have seen an add about a disposeable toilet brush. Throwing away the end that cleans the toliet bowl, storing the handle for further use. So therefore can the plastic handle hold germs?

Smelling good is a big factor, but actually cleaning the clothes counts more.

Thanks.

I read that chefs keep their white coats white by washing them with dishwasher powder instead of laundry detergent. The article said that this would work on all "whites" but did not say how much to use. Does anyone know how much dishwasher powder to use in an average size washing machine?

I bought an aspen white leather sofa a few weeks ago and have placed lovely scatter cushions from next on it. Unfortunately some of the cushions are light blue suede and have left little blue inky spots on the sofa, i took insurance out when i purchased the sofa but not sure if this will be part of the cover, does anybody have tips for general cleaning of a white sofa? People have suggested baby wipes but apparently you shouldnt use these on leather??

I would like to know the easiest way to get rid of chewing gum out of carpet.
The gum is not 'trodden in', I got most of it out, but there is still a fair bit that is stuck to the carpet.
It is an acrylic (i think) loop that is cream in colour, it is very noticeable.
I would love any hints! Please help, this carpet is only 6 months old!
Thanks

I have several things I don't need anymore. I'm looking for places/ideas other than Ebay, or a Yard Sale. Some of these items are just to big for Ebay.

Things include, 2 couches (in very good condition)
2 Stereos
A toy train (almost brand new)
A desk
Computer (Very slow, but otherwise okay)
etc

I have the kind that is cylindrical in shape and attaches on top of the agitator in the middle of the washer. I do not have the instruction manual. I can't help but think there must be some neat little trick out there to get it all clean (it's kind of gunky and looks gross, especially around the opening that you pour the fabric softener into). I don't want to just experiment and end up putting something in it that I can't get out until it comes off on my clothes! Any ideas?? Thanks!

My wife has her friend wanting to give us a 3 year old electric dryer and with the heat here in southern California currently, the possible rolling blackouts of electricity - we have both gas and electric hook ups, however we are currently paying a small fortune in electric, due to having to run the air conditioner. Need something sensible to explain to either myself or my wife about the pro's and con's of an electric dryer - please and thank you.....

Before the Dawn/Hydrogen Peroxide mixture, I tried vinegar and salt to remove the red wine stain (I spilled a HUGE full glass on this new carpet). Now I have red wine stains AND blue stains from the blue Dawn dishsoap I used!!! Help! How do I get rid of the prominent blue????? I don't want to keep dousing my rug with liquid upon liquid only to make the stains worse or produce mold. Anything you have tried that works... please let me know!!!

If so, what strength is needed? There was a contributor in another post who said vinegar can be used to remove algae streaks from roof shingles. They claimed it was more environment-freindly. Sounds right but is it effective? Anybody had any experience with that? Thanks.
