I have the kind that is cylindrical in shape and attaches on top of the agitator in the middle of the washer. I do not have the instruction manual. I can't help but think there must be some neat little trick out there to get it all clean (it's kind of gunky and looks gross, especially around the opening that you pour the fabric softener into). I don't want to just experiment and end up putting something in it that I can't get out until it comes off on my clothes! Any ideas?? Thanks!

Take it out (if possible) and soak it in vinegar overnight or if it won't come out, pour vinegar and let it sit overnight and it should come right out.

It does come off, but it gets stuck.I use a dishwash brush and boiling water. When I get it unstuck, I use an old toothbrush to get all the gunk out.
