Have the kids sort the socks. My daughter is 9 and she's been doing it for at least a year or two.
If there are any left over, I leave them in the clean laundry basket for a while to see if a match shows up. If not, they go in with the old towels and rags; they are great for washing the car; just slip them on like a glove and start scrubbing.

Sock the earths greatest mystery...
I have 2 kids and a husband... I've found buying each person all the same type of socks works...My husband likes a particular brand of socks so that's all I buy him.. If one goes astry there's usually another one in the basket...!!!
For my kids I use lingerie bags and put the little socks in there, it keeps them from floating around and getting lost...
My mother refused to throw away any missing socks... When I moved to their house I was the recipient of about 20 yrs. of mismatched sock ! I matched what I could and donated them to goodwill the rest and there was about 200 socks I donated to the APL (animal protection league) to use to make doggie play toys... Good luck!

Buy laundry bags for each of the kids get them to trow their dirty socks in the laundry bag mark each bag with their initials A-B-C-D- and when the socks are washed and dried everyone can fold them and put them away! In regard of the ones in the basket ,bring the basket in the living room and while watching TV in the evening you can pitch in and sort them out .

I make hubby safety pin his together in pairs before he throws them in the hamper. They also make little plastic round thingies that you stuff the tops of the socks into and it keeps them together in the wash. My problem is that hubby wears socks that have wild patterns on them and some are so similar that I can't distinguish them. Also, sometimes blue socks look like black and vice versa. This way socks flock together and stay that way so I don't have to spend time sorting them.

We put the first letter of each persons name on the bottom of the sock with a permanent marker.
Or purchase a hamper for each person in the house and put their name on it then when its gets full wash their clothes separately.

3 kids here.... We put names on our socks with pernament marker... right accross the toe.... You could use numbers if you want to. First thing, if you really want to be organized about it... throw out all you old sox and start anew. Many people try to blend in the new with the old when trying to get organized. Talk about making matters worse...LOL. Good luck. Hope this helped.

When you wash the soak´s tie them in a knot, Like this the soak´s will stay together, they wash just the same. Don´t think I could be bothered to put safety pin´s in all of them. You will be standing at your machine , till the cows come home. Just tie them

I have the same problem. I just periodically throw most of them away and buy new ones. I think that no one needs that many socks. They seem to multiply by themselves.

I say wear the socks mismatched. Or just let the hubby and kids match them up if they want them matched.
