For some unknown reason, gnats have invaded my home! They seem to love flying into my face and I am constantly swatting at the "air" trying to avoid them going up my nose, in my eyes or, YUCK, down my throat! I try sleeping with my head under the blanket but that never lasts once I'm asleep! Does anyone have any tricks to keep them away from me? They are driving me insane! Thanks!

I bought a beautiful Philodendron 2 months ago and now the leaves are turning yellow and some are turning brown and dying. Am I watering it to much or not enough? What about feeding and why type of fertilizer and how much and how often. Thanks, Chigger

I need to build the frame of Fenway park to make into a gingerbread house, it has to be fairly strong to hold all of the gingerbread.....does anyone have ideas of the best thing to use to build the shell, should i use wood or stiff cardboard or even some type of bendable metal like chicken wire?

I have my doubt about just pressing the test button. The alarm may sound , but who knows if it actually detects the smoke to go off? Any firefighters know the best way to check a detector to see if it actually "detects" the smoke?

I turned thermostat from 65 to 70, woke up at night with 80 deg.
disconnected two wires at honeywell round thermostat non- digital, still on. Disconnected the red at aquastat switch, furnace shut-off. reconnected/back on. I then reinstalled the thermostat, rapidly switched it back and forth numerous times till I heard the click and it shut off. I also have an amtrol water maker which I turned off to try and isolate which one is the problem. I plan on leaving the hot water maker off, let the house cool to 60 and turn the thermostat to 66 to see if it will shut off after reaching 66. Here are the questions: Does anyone know what this could be? Does this have relay switches and could they get stuck on? Does anyone have any experience with this amtrol water maker? Thinking of changing to the regular water heater?

I own a sad, sick corn plant. It needs help!
It was left outside in cold weather for a couple of days by accident-oops! It's inside now, but the poor corn plant got polka-dots on some of it's leaves, and the other ones have brown at the very tip. It needs help! I water it once a week. Should something be done differently?
Thanks in advance!

I really love nature, and being surrounded by it, helping out with the birds to the ants. Now its winter though, and I feel so like restless. Is there anything I could do to help out animals? I started reading nature books, and everything is for spring and summer! I live in zone 6-7 in Long Island. Some info on my yard: I have a small pond, 100-250 gallons, Most of my yard is brick, I have a vegatable garden, my backyard is like this: Pond with rocks around it, pebbles, brick patio, and a little garden, about 10'x 30'. Any suggestions on helping the birdies, or frogs, or bugs, or hedge hogs, or any other wildlife near me at this time of year?

I have built a rectangular cabinet mounted on a wall, with intended doors that are completely flush on top, sides and bottom. When I mounted the first door on internal hinges, there is now a gap by the hinge when the door closes. I must be using the wrong hinges?

I have a lot of chemicals and paints that I use throughout the year. With winter coming on I don't want them to freeze and I have no safe place to store them inside the house.

What is the best way to keep them warm. I thought about building a cabinet and putting some sort of heating source in there, but that can be dangerous too.

I have 20 gallons of masonry paint that I was going to use to paint a house I ended up sellling. I still like the color, and I was wondering if I could paint my present house with it. This house has wooden window moldings, but is sided with some kind of pressed-board siding, like Masonite. I believe the paint is latex-based. Any suggestions?

I am fixing up my house in order to sell it and just want to fix some things cosmetically. My kitchen is small - 13' 9" x 9' 11" - and has honey colored cabinets and white appliances. Unfortunately, the person I bought it from installed green countertops, and so I'm stuck with that color. I'm buying a light golden colored floor (think watered down gold). What color should I paint the walls? I have burgundy accents in the room, but I was afraid burgundy paint would make the room look smaller. Suggestions?

Ok, we cleaned it out and scrubbed it with pinesoll and Odo-Ban. We threw everything out except the milk and new groceries that havent been opened. We moved the fridge and cleaned under it and there was nothing there. It was very clean, but we recleaned it anyways. We cleaned the freezer too and threw out the ice. We just cleaned the hell out of it! Now I reopened it today and it stinks just the same as before.

I even put two boxes of baking soda in the fridge and two in the freezer a few days ago and it did nothing.

Also, and maybe this is all psychological, but whenever we eat soemthing that has been open in there, like drink we get really bad stomach aches. The fridge is only three years old I believe. It's a Fridgidare. Any suggestions? Could it be a bacteria? please help! I also checked for dead mice and there was none.
Thanks everyone for your kind answers!!!!

I believe this bug came in my home with the plants I brought in from my porch. I would like to find out what kind of bug/insect I have found and brought into my home. It is small enough to hide under a plant leaf, is black with orange markings on its back, it has legs but I'm not sure how many. I don't know if this bug is just in east TN or if it is found everywhere.

My house is being constructed now. Roof is done. When I went into attic, I observed that ceiling has tons of nails (30-40%) piercing thru the roof. I did not observe the same at my friends place constructed by another builder.

It is not safe for sure, but is this the common building method? Is it okay? Any chances of leaking in the future etc?

thanks!

I have a concrete wall in the middle of the basement I want to remove. It is about a meter high and 10-15" thick, very strong.
I tried an elecrical hummer drill -- it will take forever. Explosives are out of question! Are there tools available for renting out that can do this kind of job?
