I am fixing up my house in order to sell it and just want to fix some things cosmetically. My kitchen is small - 13' 9" x 9' 11" - and has honey colored cabinets and white appliances. Unfortunately, the person I bought it from installed green countertops, and so I'm stuck with that color. I'm buying a light golden colored floor (think watered down gold). What color should I paint the walls? I have burgundy accents in the room, but I was afraid burgundy paint would make the room look smaller. Suggestions?

From that description, I would think it would look aestheticallly pleasing to keep going with the "golden" motif and paint the kitchen walls a creamy golden color. Not TOO bright harsh yellow--I would think a rich gold tone: something like THIS http://glitter-graphics.com/graphics/349877

Think a LITTLE lighter, more of a creamier golden tone.

I think what would also be a VERY nice touch is to have green floral borders applied to the top of the kitchen wall and at the very bottom, such as an ivy motif: http://www.visualaccents.com/kitchen/images/english-ivy-border-sm.jpg

That would tie together the gold and the green BEAUTIFULLY, wouldn't clash, and I think would be very pleasing to the eye to a potential buyer. I have a personal hobby of home decorating, so I match up a lot of colors and looks!

But in any design motif you choose, I would DEFINITELY agree it's a bad idea to paint a small kitchen such a dark, bold color as burgundy. Frankly, I would think it would even be hard to pull off in a large one.

Take care!

When we moved into our house we had white cabinets in the kitchen with a nasty peachy color on the walls and ceiling. After some consideration I decide to paint my kitchen walls a color called Cracker Bitz it's a nice warm color and I found it at Lowe's. The ceiling I painted white and I made curtains in a fabric that had a similar color as the walls in the background but also had reds, blues and greens. I then carried those colors as my accents throughout my kitchen. For example potted herbs, and artwork. My stainless appliances even look good with it.

What about a lighter shade of the green? That would set off the cabinets nicely. A pale green would go nicely with pale gold, and you could still do some burgundy accents in towels and kitchen accessories.

Since your kitchen is small I would suggest that your use wall paper. Something with a light color with specs of green and burgundy, or just paint it White and use a light border with specs of green and burgundy.

Go to the hardware store and get paint chips in various colors and take them home to try against the green. Also, the store employees in the paint dept will have helpful suggestions.

You dont say if the countertops are dark or light green. But you need something to contrast with these maybe a pale shade of green.

Go with a sunny yellow (much lighter than the floor). White is too boring, but be sure it's not too yellow. Sherwin Williams sells paints called "Luminescences" which reflect lots of light and are very clean and clear, not muddy. There are several light shades of yellow that would look good. One is called "Corona" and my favorite is called "Paper White". Also, "French Vanilla" is warm and cozy.

An oatmeal or beige color. Since you selling the home, you take risks in putting too many colors in it for resale. Go as neutral as possible.

if your selling you want to stick to neutral colors. try a light honey or cream color that way any prospective buyers can se the possabilities. alight color will also make the room look bigger.
