Every home has a toilet with a tank on the back (unless they use an outhouse). Is there a reason that toilets in homes have tanks? Would the flush valve simply not work in a residence? Why do hotel rooms toilets have tanks but the ones in the lobby have valves?

Should I screw an eyebolt through a ceiling joist or should I go into the attic and put a 2x4 across 2 joist and run the bolt through the 2x4? Or is there another way. It needs to hold about 300 lbs.

Specifically, does the linoleum have to be removed? If it doesn't, how do you prepare it to accept thin set and then tile?

Due to rising heat costs, I was looking around for some cost effective insulators for an apartment I'm looking after for a friend.

He suggested we should place 1.5 inch styrofoam on the walls (inner) and then cover it up with dry wall.

It's a large apartment so we'll be covering alot of units so I'm wondering if there are any good cost effective insulators that can be set up to cut down the heating bill?

NOTE - This is in Alberta so we sometimes get cold winters. I usually get my supplies from Totem but I would like to see if anyone has any good ideas on how to do this?

Hi everyone, My husband and I just bought our first home in September and we fell in love with it the first time we seen it. It's a 6 bedroom 2400 sq ft, with an open floor plan combining Kitchen, Dining, and Living. I have plans to change a few things, but the first thing I'd like to change is all the white. The walls are white and the kitchen cabinets are white. The floors are hardwood, and the trim is a stained 4" pine.
I've looked at TONS of design pics and just can't figure out what to do, and what the best colors are. All the colors I like they are shown with white trim, I like the wood trim. If there's someone out there that has a little time on their hands and have a knick for this kind of thing, I'd really appreciate the help. I plan on redoing the whole house eventually, and I don't see myself getting very far if I can't even pick paint colors... :) I have pics of before and after moving in, if that would help...miss_cheevius@yahoo.com
any advice would be great.. thanks!!

I have a 6 foot cross that I added white lights too and want to put it in the front yard as a Christmas decoration. I was going to put it in the ground, but the ground is frozen. Any suggestions as to how to stablize it from wind so it won't topple over (I thought about cross feet but I think I may need more than that) and yet I don't want it to look 'tacky' with tons of wood braces? Any ideas?

I guess I've learned the hard way: we've got hard water; and NeVeR forget to wipe the ceramic tile walls after showering!

I didn't know it was needed, and didn't wipe the tile after showers for several months after tiling in a new bath. The tiles are dulled/covered by waterspots. I've tried everything I know to remove the water spots: brillo, comet, tilex, Mr. eraser, a good-for-nothing steam cleaner thing, elbow grease, and MoRe elbow grease. Geez ~ It's just water! [I know, calcium...] But, What's the deal? Why is it so hard to remove?

I now know what NoT to do and will never leave a shower without first wiping it dry. But for damage already done, what can I do to get the tiles back to shiny new, with no water marks?
