Should I screw an eyebolt through a ceiling joist or should I go into the attic and put a 2x4 across 2 joist and run the bolt through the 2x4? Or is there another way. It needs to hold about 300 lbs.

Go into your attic and locate the center of two of your joist. Locate the center of your two joist on were your hammock is to be. Us two 2x4s on the inside of your joist locate them on the outsides of your center hammock location. Keep in mind that these two blocks will be 12,18,or 24in in length, and they should be placed vertically. The center should have a 2x6 and be installed horizontally. Make a hole all the way thru , and install your eye-bolt using a washer then another washer then nut. It should be more than enough strength for what you are doing. Remember almost every carpenter's nail has enough strength to hold 120lbs each. Good Luck!!!

make a 2x4 frame that is screwed to the top of the joist and install a solid eye bolt to it.the eye bolts they use on the front of a boat are supper strong.remember to put the stress on top of the joists, not under neath.

you do need to go into attic and put 2x4 or 2x6 across at least 2 joist,I would run it across several then run an eye bolt into it.

I would go up in the attic and span two 2x6 (stacked) across at least three joists, nailed in place, .
then use a welded eyebolt ( 1/2") with a large washer or bearing plate, and double nut it.
this will help save your tail bone.
happy swinging!

run a chain through the ceiling, and make a loop over the joist...then you dont have to worry about a screw falling out.

300 LBS, I WOULD AT LEAST USE A 4X4 ACROSS THE RAFTERS, BUT U WOULD NEED TO NAIL A STUD JUST ABOVE THE SHEETROCK IN THE ATTIC OR THE MOVEMENT OF THE HAMMOCK WILL DAMAGE THE SHEETROCK WHILE IT ROCKING BACK AND FORTH. DONT USE A SCREW EYEBOLT, BUT A EYEBOLT LONG ENOUGH TO GO THROUGH THE STUD AND THE 4X4 WITH A WASHER AND DOUBLE NUT ITON TOP

Go to a sporting goods store and look at the device/rig that they sell to hang 80 lb. punching bags. They cost about $10-20.

If you don't hook into some solid structure up stairs your chair will be on the floor.
