Every home has a toilet with a tank on the back (unless they use an outhouse). Is there a reason that toilets in homes have tanks? Would the flush valve simply not work in a residence? Why do hotel rooms toilets have tanks but the ones in the lobby have valves?

Commercial toilets without tanks require much larger water supply lines (as well as more pressure) than residential tank type toilets. It would not be cost effective in the normal home.

The valve toilets do a more thorough job of splashing water into the bowl at high speeds, which helps remove stains. Additionally, the valve toilets are more resistant to clogging. Also, perhaps you've noticed that you can repeatedly flush a valve toilet with virtually no interval between each flush--no need to wait for a tank to fill.

Some valve type toilets often have one shared tank on a floor above or on the roof, useful for toilet blocks with multiple pans. Other types rely on a water mains with higher flow (due to increased diameter of pipe) this gives the rush of water required that a tank would otherwise provide.

The standard home has either a 3/4" or 1" supply line.
If you have a 2" water line into your residence, you may be able to use a commercial toilet valve.
If not, you'll have to settle for the tank like the rest of us.

The tanks is called a cisten - All toilets have them public ones have hidden cistern's which are built behind a false wall. I assume the reason why they are hidden is because people can come along and put stuff in the cisten and block the whole system up.
