Well TC gave the answer if you are alone. So I will go with the idea that you might have children or family around...
A wicker basket is nice but not very masculine for him. What about wrapping it in paper, like a cylinder. Then tie the ends up instead of taping them and make it look like a giant candy. Or what about getting it under the tree when he is not around and using it as the tree skirt and hide it with all the presents on top and then he can notice it at the end of handing out the gifts.

buy some clear plastic wrap (at a party supply store usually) - you need the longest roll. Cut a section that would extend about 2 feet out from the basket when the basket is centered on it. pull the sides up carefully , you will have to move them around to get the look you want . tie the gathered portion at the top with green and red raffia. Make a bow with the raffia and attach. Fluff the top out and cut it to shape as needed. This is pleasing to the eye and also not too "girly" The raffia gives a more earthy masculine look.

I like the wicker basket, because you can use it later... but use a clear plastic bag that they use for easter baskets. it will be unique and will show off all of your clever personalizations.

You could make it into a treasure hunt. Give him clues till it leads to the blanket. You could maybe hide it inside a couch cushion or the freezer, bathtub or dryer. Some where it wouldn't be expected. The fun is the hunt & then you are rewarded!

The fabric will likely catch on the cut ends of the wicker, and it can cause it to fray. Sorry about that.

i would suggest wrapping the basket with cellophane first to ensure that the blanket is not wrinkled when opened.
then wrap with wrapping paper.
hope this helps1

If you are alone, why not wrap yourself in it when he is not looking. He will love it and remember it!
