Looking through recipes, I have noticed a huge difference in vinagar to water portions. Anywhere to 5 parts vinagar to 1 part water or half and half. I am not looking to pickle peppers just to can mild banana peppers or Jalpeno peppers. What actually preserves peppers so they don't go bad after canning? Is it the vinagar or the air tight seal?? Should I be using pickling salt to preserve?

I have a sincere question that I am curious to know the answer to: To people that chose not to wear fur, leather, etc... also boycott feathers? As in feather pillows or hats with feathers on them? Or are feathers ok??
Thanks

I heard a Doctor say that eating too many carrots will turn your skin slightly orange. And it takes months for the pigment to go away. Has anybody else ever heard this?

I've just juiced some carrots and apples and the "stuff" left behind looks useful (maybe only for compost), but not sure what I can do with it. Any ideas or recipes?

I just got these new "Viana Cowgirl" vegan steak things from Germany for fun http://veganstore.com/new-products/viana-cowgirl-veggie-steaks/Page_2/557st.html and I just realized that I have no idea what people do when a slab of "meat" is dinner.
:)

When I was a kid I just drowned it in catsup... but that probably wouldn't taste too good now.

Should I put sautéed onions on it or something with some kind of spinach side dish?
Thanks
:)

Growing up in Illinois, we had this great spice store called Common Ground. They sold spices in bulk, out of bins and barrels. You could buy any amount from an ounce to a pound. We'd bag our own and the cashier would weigh it and charge us accordingly. I'm looking for that kind of store in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Does anyone know of one like this? I'm this-close to going through the Yellow Pages and calling every store until I find one.

I have friends coming to supper tomorrow. Have just found out that my veggie friend has become vegan. I am stumped what to cook as all my veggie recipes contain dairy products. I was going to do a mushroom and asparagus pasta dish - it has cream & parmesan in it plus I'm not sure if pasta would be OK? Also salad dressings - Ok if I make my own with Olive Oil & vinegar etc?
I'd rather not cook separate meals for everyone - not because I'm lazy just because I don't want my friend to feel uncomfortable. Any suggestions on how I can make this dish acceptable for a vegan or even any other good recipes (haven't been shopping yet).
Sorry if I appear ignorant of vegan diets - have to admit I'm not even strictly vegetarian myself.
Thank you
